Transcript | [No Envelope] [Page 1] Essex Ont. August 3rd 99 Dear Sister I received your letter 7 July this morning as I was leaving Woodslee. I came up here today to attend a picnic and have some fun and as I see your letter was written on July 14th and only arrived to day [today?] I thought I better answer it at once. I am writing this in Dr Richardson's office so if the paper is not nice looking don't say anything. I received your money all right [alright?] and as I was always waiting for a letter since the 12th I did not deem it necessary to write one. I think I informed you of the first part of my examination and I have not much to say about the last; I did not look at any papers since I finished working and I think I will not bother any more about them until I hear the results. I expect to know we came [Page 2] out in about ten days. I am glad to know you had a good time on the 12th and if I am well and over there next year I shall lend a [hand?] on [more?] drumming. I may play for [Essex?] Band and the Band Convention in [Detroit?] on the 17th inst. Anyhow I am going up to see the fun. I have got a Job during the holidays. I got an agency for selling a Book. A few of the other High School Boys got the same though in different parts I have the Townships of [Maidstone?] and Rochester or the territory adjoining Woodslee and Essex. I have been at it for about 10 days and I made a little over 5 during [sic], I get a salary and commission besides. I did intend to work for 40 days during holidays as that was my agreement but I think I will not keep at it during all the holidays so I want some time to myself. Of course I will not make very much from this out as I have the best of the territory canvassed However I shall have some money to pay my expenses at Model School this fall, and also to buy a suit for myself. [Page 3] I suppose before this letter reaches you Willie Duncan will have arrived there. He left New York on Saturday last. I have not seen him since I arrived in this Country the last time. He took the notion to home all in a sudden. All Woodslee folks are well Cassie and Baby are also well. I have not been out to see Annie since she came to Leamington I think I shall go out there some day soon. Three or four of the High School boys and myself are thinking of going out to [Ciade] Beach (a summer resort) and stay for a few weeks, and if we do we shall have some fun. We intend camping out [board?] ourselves I am not sure if they are going yet but if they go I am sure we shall have a week (sic) fun and amusement. This is the month for picnics and excursions in this country picnic [picnics?] and excursions of all sorts comming [coming?] off this month, and most likely I shall attend [Page 4] a few of them. In regard my [sic] History examination I think I took a pass on it although I did not know much about it. Just as I was going up to School the excursion train was at the station and one of the bands was playing the P. Boys. of course I was wishing I was going along with them but business is business. I am thinking Joe Gilkison would be as well unmarried yet a while. I think he might get some body [somebody?] better than a hired girl. He is in a hurry if that is all he is getting. I don't blame Wm [William?] for being angry at him so would I one should select somebody equal to themselves if possible. As far as passing my exam I shall say nothing about it, until I see the news. If I don't pass, it does not make much difference as I intend to [teach?] in my second. I shall go to Model School in the month of Sept. and if I am successful I will begin teaching at Xmas. This is a rather short letter but it will do as I have not much time for writing very busy running around. J A [James Alexander?] Smyth What is the matter with your letter being 19 days comming [coming?] I have been waiting for one for two weeks. J.A.S. [James Alexander Smyth?] |
