I should have written at that time but as I was sending a letter to Willie Gilkison, I told him to let you know, it was alright, I am sorry to know that you are not very well, I suppose a pain in the ear is not a pleasant sensation, I think I told you in last letter that the appeal was not sustained, I am glad to know you had [Page 2] good weather for digging potatoes, I dont think the crop was as bad as previous reports had indicated; I think since you have got a new surveyor that you may get along better with your road work, Joseph MacFarland's people are making a complete change,' I notice you say you are for giving David a hoist I have received your last letter in which you say he got expelled. I also learn you have lots of [fun?]; Does both Your Lodge and Plumbridge Want a separate District? That is the way I understand it [Page 3] In your last letter of Nov 11 you say the noise still continues in your ear; Perhaps you should see a doctor about it, You dont want for charges on either side, in connection with the Orange association, I think some of those Plum men think orangeism is a kind of a society to have fun in and a good time and that all (sic); You have had [charge?] before [against?] young John, that was the time you should enforced them (sic); I wonder what the Co Lodge thinks of the affair. It is likely they think thats not much done but quarrelling in the Plumbridge District, [Page 4] However you shall have a lovely time at Plumbridge at whatever time the meeting takes place, I have got another of John's letter's, I believe John can be at the most of the others in writing a letter, he can write a fair literary letter and at the same time contain lots of information, not a bad writer either He informs me that Miss Dunbar is going to leave Eden School, It is too bad that the people of that locality have got to talk about people, and interfere other people's business (sic), [Page 5] I send you a paper [(two)?] the other day, I don't suppose there is a great deal of news in them but you will always find the High School News, and the weekly examination are alway reported in them so that you shall see what I am doing and the marks taken as compared with the others, I did not do well in Algebra Examination yesterday, I got 37% but there are 6 below me and seven above me 6 out of the seven that are above me have been over the work last year so this is two years for them, [Page 6] and the other one (M Walton) got 39%, However I kept above the 33% limit, One cannot form an opinion as to how the [they?] will do on the final untill about March. We had our Commencement on Friday evng [evening?] Past - I sent you a programme in the papers I took part in the two choruses, by the boys the [Dumb?] bell exercise. The certificates were given that night, I received two certificates We charged 25¢ admission and we had $50 [doors?] receipts and after paying expenses $36.40¢ clear, We intend to buy a Piano, as the organ in School now is not [no?] I [Page 7] of course worried about £50 for the piano but there is quite a bit in the treasury of the Literary Society already You shall see an account of the additions made to the High School Laboratory in last weeks Free press,. The H.S [High School?] board expended about £50 in fitting up the science room about a week ago, We can all perform our own experiments in Physics and Chemistry now, Every two of us have one table, so that a very efficient training will be received in performing experiments, .The 1st experiment we had in Wednesday was [Page 8] making Nitric Oxide (NO) [and?] in applying the tests for this gas my partner got burned in the fingers by [phosphor?], So we ask him now if Phosphorous burns. You know this Phosp, if brought out of water will take fire itself, so when it is set in fire it burns very rapid, I will write to that inspector in the near future to I see what he says; If I was there I know enough To teach Eden School; and a lot more that will never be taught there; I think I will close now as I have to answer a letter from W J Duncan and [have?] [composed?] to write to-day. J. A. Smyth [James Alexander Smyth?] [Written upside down on Page 5] PS This is thanksgiving in this Country so we have a holiday today;' J. A.
