I wrote this letter last
night and I am posting it
tonight I am also sending a
newspaper with it which contains
an account of the fair and also
the High School sports. I just forgot
to mention in the other part keep
me informed on the civil service
exams etc. find out all you can
from time to time; also send me
the Irish times as often as you can
there is some good editorial [sic]
in it especially [mu-rly?] pieces
I like to have something like
that to read on Saturdays when
I take a while off study [studying?] I also
wish you would cut out some

[page 2]
of the Ramblers piece [sic] from Tyrone C,
[Constitution?] & send them they are also
good. Do you ever get any Sunday School
Periodical [sic] anymore, I wonder
you would not send a few of
these, I got 9 shilling [sic] for
playing the snare drum with the Essex
Brass Band on Fair day, that
was a fair days pay, equal to how
many shovelling stones? It kept
my pocket for the day, I also got
free entrance and my dinner
which was three more shilling [sic]
[earned?] So you see one can earn a few
shillings in more ways than one.
Now you see I always wish to send
enough news for my five cent
J A [James Alexander?] Smyth
