[Ontario?] Dec 19-12-97 Dec,19th 97 Dear Sister 19-12=97 19-12.12 I received your letter a few days ago and I see you sent me [Tommy?] Hayes address, I think I told you in my last letter, I had a letter from him. I got it previous to receiving your letter, but I have not answered it yet, He did not give [me?] much news about war etc which I would like to know about, nor about the physical features of the Country. These are things which would interest me about that Country. In regards [that?] new School teacher, there are a family of that name here in Essex. Two boys and a girl are going to High School. The girl was telling me the other day that her father came from Armagh so I was thinking they might be same relation, Her father was a Minister but is dead. If you are introduced to them at any time you might bring up the conversation and find out. When any changes come around. Remember the rules of society, You know there is nothing among strangers that marks one [one s?] ignorance so quickly as this, and indeed I must say these rules are almost unknown in that neighbourhood, and let me tell you there is a marked difference between those who study History Literature etc, I have found this out myself just in conversation with people here, This thought came into my mind and I gave it a passing notice. I feel sorry for any strange [stranger?] comming [coming?] into that neighbourhood and I don t expect that sojourn will be very long They met a (sic) elegant sample of the community for a start. I would have liked to have known the teachers opinions at that time. I think Mr stein show (sic) queer conduct for a Preacher. As to the discord among the Brethern [brethren?] I shall say nothing about it, Speech is [silver?] but silence is golden, so I will have the golden part of it this time. Glad to know of that Sunday School started, Go to it and in winter evening (sic) get some good books and take a course of reading, It will help you all wonderfully, I don t mean any one of a family but all families Dickens works is [are?] good reading or a (sic) Eng [English?] History. I am studying the History of Greece and Rome just now and I find it very useful. Widen your knowledge by reading and it will aid much in [writing?] and in conversation. I am indeed sorry to hear of all the trouble with that [wad?], I should think they will be glad when the time is up Now you see if the boys had went at some [trades?] (Castledamph) (Castledamph) or went on to school, it would have been a simple matter to [sum?] the same amount without half the trouble, as it is they will be labouring all their lives for very little, and I see Mary and John following the same example, We are having quite a cold spell just now, Good skating yesterday. We had Lyceum on Friday. I and three [5th?] boys made Made (sic) three minutes speeches each. My subject was Xmas in Ireland. I did nt say a great deal about it. one thing I didn t till [tell?] them about drinking Whiskey. School closes on Wednesday and opens on Jan 4th 1898 I dont know how many people are going to be at Woodslee, [in?] Xmas. I think Annie will be up from St. Thomas, but Charley has to work. Miss Ballantyne is not comming [coming?] She could not get away from her work, I was down at Woodslee last Saturday. I suppose I will receive a letter this week, However I can answer it next as I will be able to write [from?] this on for three Cents, Your Brother J A Smyth. |
