Dear Sister
I received your letter yesterday
and I came down early to school this
morning so I am intending to answer it
during the day.
I received your former letter and
also the money, I did not get
the money until a week after, I suppose it
missed the first ship comming [coming?] out.
I notice in that letter a reference to Wm [William?]
Ballantine. I would be almost of the
opinion that he is of a childish disposition
now and perhaps thinks he sent those things. I have
not received those photos yet, and I am waiting for them,
I liked to know that old shephered [shepherd?]
is still alive, those little things interest one who is
away just as much as hearing of other things around the
house.
I got my suit of clothes about three weeks
ago but I did not pay for them yet. the suit fits very
well and looks good,
I am sure old Robt [Robert?] McFarland
is raging about John getting married to Lize
[Lizzie?] Dunbar. I can imagine I see
him roaming around, Who owns the rabbits
now?
If I can manage to go home next summer,
perhaps I can have a days shooting.
I think John has a fine time when he can
have a days fun when he wants it I wish I was that
way though it (sic) likely I have more days to myself
than he has but there is not the opportunity
to have the fun. I may say I can have every
Saturday but no good unless you have a place
to go shooting,
I take no interest in that kind of
fun out here at all. Any how [Anyhow?] I am
always scared of failing on some examination that
is ahead of me, As far a [as?] money
is concerned I wish if you have plenty of
it that you would send another order as I
have not enough to finish paying board for
this term and if I have any left after
another order I can put part of it to pay
for my suit, that is if you folks have
enough of it.
I have not secured a school yet I think that
is just as hard as passing examinations.
There are several vacancies in this county,
but competition is keen.
One of our boys has got one at $375 per
Annum. They [The?] others have an
advantage because they are known and have
friends to work for them, and although my
uncle has been here for 30 years: he is
scarcely [known?] outside of Woodslee.
So that in regard to influence I am not
as fortunate as some of them, though I am
as safe as some others in that line.
There is a School close to Woodslee and if
it is vacant at Xmas I think I stand a
good show I have been writing now for
some minutes and now the [modelites?] and
other students are comming [coming?] in.
This is Tuesday morning and we have nothing
to do [on?] Tuesdays but observe in the rooms. We
go in and observe the regular teachers teach,
then tomorrow and the remainder of that week
we teach in the same room and as a matter of
course we get a few criticisms. We have only
two more weeks to teach until we are over
all the rooms of course we do a good deal
more teaching than that as we teach in our
own room and before the Principal
and model students
The teaching is not the hardest part, it is
the written work at the end of the terms and
this requires 60% to pass.
How is Uncle John I never hear a word about
him now whether he is weel [well?] or doing
weel [well?] or anything else,
It is a good thing that there is something to
keep Sarah Elkin in doors [indoors?] for a while. You see
every thing [everything?] takes its course if you only wait.
I attended the Convention of North Essex.
teacher Assoc [Associations?] last week, we had
two days of it. The Windsor and Walkerville
Convention takes place on Nov 30 and Dec 1st so
we will have two more day [days?] then,
I dont think of anything more that is particularly
interesting so I shall bring this to a close.

James A Smyth
