Dear Brother
I received
your letter last week
and glad to hear that
you are all well. We
are all well here we
have very good weather
here now for this time
of the year I dont
think it is as cold here
now as it would be at
home we are husking corn
now we are about half
done it is not a very
nice work it is done
all with the hands three
or four days work would
wear the skin off. Father
wanted to know if the acres was
the same size the [they?] are the
same English Measure He
has one hundred and 50 Acres
in his farm we have about
twenty acres to plough yet
we will plough as much
as we can after we get
done with the corn what
is left will not be done to
spring we have 25 ploughed
I did not plough much
when the other boy was
here but he is away now
so I will have all the
horse work from this on
Uncle and me when
we be talking about home
I be strokeing [stroking?] out
lines and showing him the
way our farm is now
The [there?] must have some
great floods there this
year we threshed our
oats last week we had
517 bushel threshed
them all in 13 hours the
people in this country
call your flail a
poverty club they ask
me is that what we thresh
with I was at a
party last night Halloween
night we had a fine
time playing a good many
tricks they play at Home
I suppose they were not
much fun there this year
either Sarah A Duncan
is going to Collage [college?]
this week I think she is going
to take up Tyre [type?]writing
and Short Hand writing
An Education here is better
than Farming it is easier
anyway I wish I had
went to School the last
two years these letters
of mine is like William they
are not very well done he is
not a very good writer and
words used where they should
not mind that in the future
No more at present
James Alex Smyth
