To Father
I have just
received your letter tonight
I was down at Prayer Meeting
tonight so I am not long
in they [the?] rest is gon [gone?]
to bed so I thought I would write
this letter tonight. The
Minister was up here visiting
this evening (they dont give
it out the Sunday before like
they do at home) they just come
when they like. I may tell you
something about they [the?] kind
of preachers that is [are?] here
I dont think I told you before.

[page 2]
The first thing is I have never
been in a presbyterian Church
since I came here there is no
presbyterian church nearer than
the [St?] Centre there is a Methodist
Baptist, Roman Catholic and
Sal [Salvation?] Army in Woodslee I
have been in an English church
twice, we go all the time
to the Methodist they are pretty
strong all through Canada
and very good there is Church
twice every Sunday and prayer
meeting Monday and Thursday.
And now for Lodges I may tell
you how many is in woodslee
Orangemen, Royal Tempelars
[Templars?] of [Temparance
Temperance, Odd fellows,
Young Brittons, Workmen
Patrons of Industry and
Patrioatic [Patriotic?] Sons
of America.

[Page 3}
Orangemen and Young Brittons [Britons?]
is [sic] nearly alike only they [the?]
young B [Brittons?] are all young boys
Workmen is an insurance lodge Uncle is
in it I dont know much about Odd
fellows Patrons of Industry is a
farming society they all buy ther
[their?] good [goods?] from
one man and then they get them
very cheap and P S of America
I cant tell what they are but
I know they are bound if possible
to keep Catholic out of office
you cant tell who belongs or
who dont very secret so that is
the lodges that is in Woodslee
not a night in the week but there
is someone I may tell you I joined
R.T. Temperance last friday night.
I got through in one night there
is about forty five members there
was [sic] two young girls joined
with me so I had not to go through
alone

[page 4]
Friday night now is Election of
Officers I will tell you something more
about it when I see much I can tell it is
a secret Lodge like all others signs
passwords and so on I might be able
to tell you some of the the pledge I
am glad to hear that Mary Duncan and Alex
is getting better now I think it would been
[sic] nicer if they had went [gone?] home
quietly write soon and give me all their
[the?] news about it I am glad to hear of so
many young Orangemen but it dont look well to
have them fighting so soon I think I would
slack upon whisky around there and not give
these young ones the habit I would hate to
be digging potatoes now I dont think I would
like it very well I see you had Betties up
will [well?] thats very good to visit each
other like they do here [dont?] trouble any
more about that Alphabet it did not matter
whether I got it all or not only just to see it
