Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr James A Smyth Essex Essex County Ontario Canada [Stamped] STRABANE JU [3?] [02?] [Back of envelope] [Stamped] ESSEX JU 13 02 ONT [Page 1] Irish Street Strabane June 1st 02 Dear Bro Just a line or two to let you know how I am getting along I am out at Sion Mills this 4 weeks 6/- a week extra what they call country money thats 23/0 I have now 17/ & 6/ those laboures [labourers'?] cottages we are working at they have some in Clady Ill be going there this week they [there?] are seven carpenters out at them they have got a big contract outside Derry they are going in heavy [Page 2] in this year The [There?] are more tenders out for some more houses in the same place the'll [they'll?] apt to have some of them I sent Mary a letter a few days ago I only got one from her since she went out there I had a letter from home & I was surprised when I read it to hear of Joe Youngs [Young's?] death He will be buried today sunday if it had been a good day for riding I would (sic) went up to the funeral Joe was always ready when wanted. That [That's?] a we [wee?] drammer [drummer?] gone the band started to practice last Friday [Page 3] night The [I O G T?] met on Wednesday eve [evening?] 7:30 It was musical night I gave them a song the most of them all gave a song or Recitation or something we have one very funny man some thing [something?] like James Houston he gave us a piece on marriage I can assure you he made us laugh May 28 was grumblers night you will see by the program they all or most of them grumbled less or more I wish I could get good funny books If you were in my place you could keep them all going with what you have read [Page 4] That man I refer to you will see his name in the program "John Brown * With regards that money dont [don’t] send any I dind [did] not mean I only [made?] the joke I have 3£ paid now I think its dear enough £10 10s I might sell it about October I might get 6 or 7£ for it you soon get out of concert of them The Good Templars has (sic) started a cyclcing [cycling?] club I have been out 5 times with them they number 18[n?] 12 males 6 females That name you see [W?] Graham is the cashier in S Donnells [Donnell's?] I was telling you about [Page 5] You will see my name on back of program as sentinal [sentinel?] you know what that is Its a very good society too you can spend a nice eve [evening?] every week [First?] Wednesday is auction night I bought a mouth organ at 1/ those things are auctioned & goes the benefit (sic) of the Fund I hope we will get a good day on our Excursion to Warran point [Warrenpoint?] [Page 6] the last train leaves Strabane at 7 a m two others before that for the Plum [Plumbridge?] people & else where [elsewhere?] Strabane goes in the 7 Im [I'm?] sure when the day come [comes?] Mary will be thinking on it unless she is very bussy [busy?] Have you any books on Carpentry with lines you could let me [know?] no more J C [John?] C Smyth its just after striking 12 oclock not at church [today?] Transcribed by Alan Houston |
