[Letter 1] [Page 1] Castledamph June 23rd 97 Dear Brother I think I will tell you all I know about this Jubilee it is nearly all the importance I have. Well, when they all gathered they arranged where they would go [so?] it went to voting and they were five again [against?] going to the [mote?] viz. James McKelvey and the two McKnights David [Houston?] & George Young they [the?] rest went all up to the [mote?] and took all the drums with [them?]. We met the Plum [Plumbridge?] band at A Duncans about 2 oclock [Page 2] and came up round and down the far side to Plum [Plumbridge?] They [There?] were a car load [car-load?] from Derry in the Plum [Plumbridge?] But I think they did not stop long after we left. The Band left us up at the Mill Bridge and went back and left in the [Drum?] and a good Deal of them went up to the [mote?] and got a good glass full the The [sic] Mountain Dew Alic [Alice?] McClelland and Andrew give [gave?] the [Treat?] William McFarland and George Noble treated the Two bands in James Orrs and we had two more treats in James Houstons and I may say two more in the [House?] so you might say [Page 3] The [There?] were [was?] some fun But none of them to call Drunk Well as far as the Drumming goes I was Drum Major nearly all day We will have two new drummers for this twelfth James Reid and James Bob Ballantine and we will Have a triangle Man Moses Ballantine We had exactly twelve pipers James Gordon will not come this year whatever has touched his toes Tomy [Tommy?] was speaking to Mathew [Matthew?] Smith one day and He said he would not be among basdards [bastards?] and blagards Father came at Mathew [Matthew?] yesterday and He said he never told any story but He would give [no?] Author Father told Him He would believe him more than an old dog [Page 4] Mathew [Matthew?] said he was not afraid of one in the band I am afraid some one of they [the?] two will suffer. Well old James McKernan was buried here 11th of June He was never able to rise unless to sit at the fire a while. James McKelvey was [lying?] for Death and He made His Will and signed all up to his own and left nothing to his wife at all Aunt Tilda was going to stick some of them with a [Grape?] and Andrew McKelvey took it from her I think the [they?] [fought?] rings round them. But McKelvey is mending again. Excuse this writing No more at present John Chs [Charles?] Smyth and rally around [the?] old colours The twelfth is approaching again |
