[Letter 1] [Page 1] Castledamph April 18th 98 Dear Brother We received your letter on Saturday 16th we were glad to hear of you getting along so well. I was surprised to see that mistake you made in your letter about the Liverpool Apprentice "Hell" I would be bound for four years receive £30 & board but no washing well again I would come home once or twice a year & pay for the washing & get cloths [clothes?] etc I would not have much at the end of the four years I thought I would let it go by I wrote to Uncle William about it but he did not give me much satisfaction about it. [Page 2] You talk about that Civil Service you had more education than I had the time you wrote to Sherry about it, it dropped through & it would be the same with me I might as well apply to be County Court Judge for its what I would never be until I would get Education I think you ought to be good enough now for that Civil Service When I was going to school I would not be let I would be told I was good enough for any thing so that left me the way Im today I expect to be in some firm before long large or small, What do you think about that photo I got it taken to send it to Liverpool so then my mind changed & neither photo nor I went perhaps Im as well where I am, Well we have a run-a-way [runaway?] at the bridge today Daniel [Henry?] & a girl from Gortin side the name of Henry too. [Page 3] the runaway started last night [30. 10?] They had five pints of Whiskey drunk yesterday (sunday) at 3pm & they are drinking ever since they had Wm [William?] Noble fiddling last night from twelve It will be no loss to Plumbridge Public House's anyway This is a wet day it will favour it very well for the people will be all running The people will get their mouths wet again this last while the [they?] were nearly out for a subject to talk about now this will do about [daniel?] Good luck to him for by his chance [sic] I may tell you all the news when I am writing Jamie Gordon has got into a very good situation He has got in to be Mason in the Derry Asylum He will have thirty five pounds for a start rising 1£ annually till 40£.
