Handwritten: May 16 2Cl + H2S HCl + S Letter 1 Castledamph May 2nd 98 Dear Brother I thought I would write another letter to you as I am unable to do anything else I got my hand cut on Thursday last with a chisel & it is not better yet The cut is between my thumb & forefinger, so it will be a good while getting better. Well as I was telling you about Dan we got him married on Thursday I think it was the greatest day was at [Glenelly?] Meeting House this good while. Alex Duncan & Mary was his best man & maid & Joe Elkin & Tilda Ann was her's seven couple (sic) altogether viz. :- three of the Mickie s Davies (sic) Two of the Lundies (her Brothers) & Annie Wilson so you may think they were a grand set We cheered them down to church & cheered them up & the [they?] all came back at night & we had a bonefire [bonfire?] it was'ned [wasn t?] dead to the next night they were (sic) a crowd carring [carrying?] [to?] the fire all night we had a horn & kept blowing at it all night Daniel came over to us & lit his pipe The most of us all turned our backs to him "But he said he knew us all" [He?] would been as well at Elkins for he got it far worse when he left. If you had heard them speaking like Wilson I think you heard them before anyway. Elkins [Elkin s?] ones had a cow sick two or three days before the weeding [wedding?] They did not bother themselves very much So the [they?] had to send for steel & Alexander Stewart and they took the calve [calf?] from her I dont [don t?] know whether it was dead but it died after and Imedeately [immediately?] the cow expired too. It turned out a shaby [shabby?] weddg [wedding?] As I was telling you about Jamie Gordan He went to derry on Thursday. [He?] may have faced a good deal of the lunaticks [lunatics?] In [ready?] I was down in Derry on Saturday with a man the name of [Gilfillan?] & when father & me got there he had just got a fellow In one way I was not sorry only for the loss of the money. I got a sight of that old Maiden City we had not much time to spare I saw two ships in at the quay I never got a sight of Derry walls at all. Gilfillan told me when I was leaving the shop for to take a good look at the Bridge for it was the best in the three kingdoms its a little longer than [Drumunaspar?} Bridge I could go to Derry tomorrow I would not be a hair of my head afraid to go through it all and get back It is well your [you're?] not in that Spanish-American War If you had been in New York or around it as long as you ar [are?] in Canada you would been been (sic) sailing round or about the Havanna Harbour The Spanish I believe will give them enough to do. no more at present John Chs [Charles?] Smyth To J A [James Alexander?] Smyth South Woodslee |
