Smyth South Woodslee Box 23 Essex County Ontario Canada [Written over Envelope] Sep 10 1891 [Stamped] [NEWTOWNSTEWART?] SP 10 91 IRELAND [Back of Envelope] [Stamped] HAMILTON 11AM SP 8 91 CANADA [Envelope contains 3 Letters] [Letter 1] [Page 1] Castledamph July 12th and 13th My Dear James- I am shure [sure?] you will think it strange to here [hear?] that we have not a meeting this twelth [twelfth?] they [the?] Drums never come off the pins nor the flag of [off?] the pole. everything just remained where the [they?] were when you left - the Plum [Plumbridge?] went to N Stewart [Newtownstewart?] and some of our meen [men?] - your mother did not care for them comming [coming?] when you were not amongst them – So they will think more of it next twelth [twelfth?] William went up to Straughroy on Saturday 11th and will not be Down to tuesday 14th So its now 11 oclock when I am writing the day is fine and the Plum [Plumbridge?] Meen [men?] of [off?] – and we are lonely enough at home - So I hope yous [you?] in that country will have a good Day in every way - you will see more there than at home But one advice I give you go no place without your Uncle and Aunt's advice as people will be all Strangers to you So ask their advice on all matters and attend to it - [Page 2] Now I will give you something regarding Glen Sass [Glensass?]– John McConnell was Dismissed at Strabane with 10s 9d of costs to they [the?] deffentents [defendants?] he then appailed [appealed?] to the assises [assizes?] in Omagh - the [they?] were in Omagh July 7 - James Hay B McKelvey J [McKery?] John Niclos [Nicholas?] John McFarland Archibald Duncan and myself were all up - against McConnell after hearing all the judge dismessed [dismissed?] McConnell on the Merits - Now he has no claim either him or McNamee above the old Ditches or fences – Still he persisted and would Keep the cattle on it - Friday the 10th we all went up and putt [put?] of [off?] the cows But with some difficulty Next day Saturday 11th we had to go up again a worse encounter still ensued as we put them off they put them on the most Difficult thing to put of [off?] was a ewe and lams [lambs?] wich [which?] they kept teathered [tethered?] they held and our ones pulled to [until?] thy [they?] gave way so we cleared the ground old Mary and Eliza struck Bob McKelvey with sticks so this morning the 12 of July the [they?] have not attempted to put Them on again - But it has cost the parteners [partners?] now about 69£ We intend to wire it all round as soon as we can [Page 3] Dear James this month for so far is weet [wet?] and cold up land [upland?] hay is only joining [beginning?] to be cutt [cut?] we have the upper land cutt [cut?] Friday and Saturday 10th and 11th - turff [turf?] is getting a stand still a great many is gathering them on the Banks - we can Do nothing with the old ones to the weather Drays [dries?] up again – crops looks well if Dray [dry?] weather would let in our flax looks splendid I think it will Do well - But to [too?] much rain is against it - potato [sic] looks well evening of the 13 one of the fines [finest?] of the fine if all the orangemen in the world were the makers of it it could not be better I will send you a paper with this note - The funeral of George Barkely was large - a great number of Cars – Denial [Daniel?] Henery [Henry?] has not Been in our house cince [since?] you left. - I think the match of William Gilky [Gilkinson?] is upside down we hear no talk of it now [Page 4] Dear James I think I said I would write every week But have forgot allredy [already?]I hope yous [you?] are getting on well with the work there I suppose you think it strange Besides at home when you write give us a long letter - The [There?] are [sic] nothing particular at present to write about The people around is [sic] all well and doing well - like folks in in [sic] America - [Noble?] give up Smyth [sic] and the carroad [track through fields?] is now open the [there?] have come two or three letters Miss McKarnan [McKernan?] she says where she is is very hot weather Joseph Duncan is stoping [stopping?] the most of his time in Newtown [Newtownstewart?] I cannot tell how they are Dowing [doing?] – Mr Steen give us a grand sermon yestardy [yesterday?] he left nothing untold he is a firm Deffender [Defender?] – the text was 28 chapter revelations 4 verse come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues Your mother and I are now alone and the and the [sic] sun is going down in her splendure [splendour?] giving the orangemen a splendid evening to retourn [return?] to there [their?] homes throughout the world hopping [hoping?] you are all well when this reaches yous [you?] J J [John James?] Smyth |
