[Stamped on Back] [NEWTOWNSTEWART?] MR 2 02 HAMILTON FEB 26 02 [WINDSOR?] [FE?] 02 ONT. [Page 1] South Woodslee Feby 23rd 1902 Sunday Dear Liza Just after coming in from Church you see by all the letters you get that I write them on Sunday its the only day that I get time now, Aunt & Belle & I drove down and uncle travelled [traveled?]. Its thawing now and the roads is [sic] just in a rain puddle and they say that its not half as bad yet as it will be. “I declare” As Daniel says I don't want to walk very much now I went to Sunday School today & I was afraid of getting stuck. I don’t know [Page 2] what its like It sticks so much to your shoes that you can't hardly lift then. I don't know whether I can go to school tomorrow or not the pair [sic] rubbers I got I have worn the heel [sic] out of them so it lets in as much mud as if I had'nt any on. They want me to get a pair of rubber boots [Mrs?] Jenner was telling me to get a pair tonight she has a pair of them, long legs all rubber. Cost $1½ or $2 so it is a little too much for my pocket just now. It's a long time now since I wrote a letter so I must go back and search up all particular events since Well we went to a party on Wednesday night 11th Feby. There was sleighing and we went on a sleigh run sleigh leads went to [Page 3] the one house 12 in each one We had a very good time it is about 3 miles from here there [their?] name is Duhurst [Dewhurst?]we played games and a lot of things, the [they?] call Sir Roger De Coverly a play they might as well call it dancing and then the Methodists says they never dance they danced it that night and spinned [spin?] the tin others that I never saw before. I joined in most of them. We left here at 8 o'clock and was [sic] there at ten We were along [a long?] [time?] on the road had to gather all the folks up as they went along And sung songs etc. We got home here at 4 o'clock I did not go to school next day as I was sleepy and a headache. I dont think I could sit up as well now as I used to. The folks here never go to a party earlier than 8 o'clock [Page 4] Glenn & Lesley has [sic] the measles now. I am going to get vacinated [vaccinated?] some of these days as Small Pox [smallpox?] is over on the other side. I dont to [sic] like to get it done now going to school I may wait to Easter. Anne has started to [travel?] now she was down today & yesterday. She just minds [reminds?] me on [sic] Sam Jordy walking you know she is not very steady yet & the hand out & fist going every way. I see you had a great night with Tom. B. C. was telling me about it. P. says that Maggie McClelland is not very well the Doctor has allowed her to go home for a while Had a letter from John C. [Charles?] last week. I see he is getting along alright but has not got a raise yet [Page 5] I hope you folks don't be like Joe Glenn wth [with?] Lizzie have him in a bag, salt & potatoes he requires something more substantial. I suppose you have got over your lonesomeness now, you have all to yourself. I suppose Wm [William?] Noble thinks there is nothing there for him now I'm afraid he is far mistaken if ever he thoughts [thought?] there was. No card playing this winter I suppose. P. says Andy had the toothache that night he was in Eden, only that he would have been down. How is W. J. [Willie John?] getting along at school I suppose his Exam. is over by now. Bob Campbell & Jamey Gilkison [Gilkinson?] is [sic] learning to fiddle I'm afraid Jamey will never make a professor. [He?] may make a stir at the road for a while anyway. Which of you or [---?] shall [have?] [Page 6] like most boys now you [live?] for it Where is Bella McKernan & Duffy now, or are the [there?] new folk about [them?]. I expect she will have to go to chapel with him Mrs Nelsons corner will have peace from this forward. Did you hear if Maggie went to America, I never answered Lizzie [McIvor’s?] letter yet. I have put it off from time to time. How is Bella doing I have only got one letter from her since she was married. I suppose she has got too much to do. They hav'nt got their photo's taken yet I suppose, I wish they would, and let us see How they look together before further improvements. Do you think could you spare me 3£ for a bycicle [bicycle?] in the summer to go to school. I am not going to take it for nothing [Page 7] I will pay back my debts when I get rich, “If I live” they are cheap here now. because they are almost out of fashion only for those that do need them. ---------- Monday night At school today [sic] thought I never could get home with mud, it is about a foot deep lost one of my rubbers or rather it went off me. So now [sic] won't last long by appearance. It is freezing a little tonight but not much. Uncle has had three young lambs but two only living one of them is two weeks old. I suppose there is none over there yet Willie G. [Gilkinson?] used to have them early. We were studying the history of the Seige of Derry today. [Page 8] Is Matilda keeping going on at Hit [History?] yet I must tell her that I'm not going to stay long. John C. [Charles?], says he see's no girl [sic] suits him about there only Lizzie McCullagh. What about Thomas now. Does the argument go on as usual or have the [they?] settled. I suppose the nights are getting short there now it is not dark here till near [sic] 7.30 They have a longer day here, I have no more news at present hoping you are all well Your Sister M [Mary?] Smyth Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
