Castledamph Sept 29th 04 Dear Brother:- I have been for writing this last week but never managed it somehow. Got two letters from you today 4D. Against them also got Essex F.P and Family Herald & St Thomas Time [Times?] from Annie with an account of Miss Risdon's death. I never was so surprised She sent one to me where it said Miss Risdon had passed the critical point but there still was danger. Well it is a short time since I left there and she was in the best of health. I wrote to her from [Remiouski?] & I was wondering why I hadn t got an answer. I have a souvenir post card [postcard?] of [Almo?] College that she sent me. when in Woodslee. I met a good many people over there and I never met any one I cared so much for as her. She was the only one I was sorry to bid Good Bye [Goodbye?] [to?] when I left St Thomas I was just Thinking today how sorry her sister must feel & also the rest of them but the trio were always together and Blanche was the leader in everything. She will be one that will be missed in St Thomas. There will be no one to take her place. I remember after the concert she was saying if I had stayed how I would have been first violin in the concert next year. I can see her how she used to drill us there and quite a task it was. I was there for dinner the last Tuesday I was in St Thomas and she and I went out for a walk through the grave-yard afterwards. I will always think of her when I see the violin. I see by your letter that you and Belle had a few words. You might not say anything for no matter what would be said they would always stick up for each other. Well I'm getting more used to everything and everybody I don't notice half that I did at first. We were putting in hay over at Stewarts yesterday so I was set to carting not a very hard job. Tommy Houston was saying I was coming till [tall?]. The first time I was down at Houston's Davie & Bella & the girl went to [walk?] so after a while I went out to the byre and Davie had just been through saying to Bella for Goodness Sake to keep me out of out of (sic) the byre when I happened to go in. He had heard some of my remarks before so I suppose he thought the byre would be worse. Uncle Charles' folks were over Sunday came by the church (evg) [evening?] so Mother, Tommy Davie & I drove up to church and met them there Mother wasn't in church for a long time so she went. We were to Willie Gilkie's [Gilkison s?] grave Joe has put up some kind of a stone with there [their?] names on. It is better than nothing Davie & Bella was here Sunday too. I went down with them at bedtime. as they put in their hay Monday. So I was down Madge stayed here until Wednesday. I don't see that she is the same as she first seemed to me either. Tuesday we put in our hay at home. Today Tommy is well Andy's ones putting in hay & Wm [William?] is with Joe Gilkison's and Father & the little fellow is thatching. There has been no rain this last two weeks. I didn't go to Gortin this week as I intended we are going to Beattie's Sunday & I am going to Gortin Wednesday (Gortin Fair day) I was showing Aunt & Uncle our pictures they think they are fine Kept full length of both of us. As we were coming out of Houston's yesterday we just happened to meet Sadie Scott & Lizzie McCullagh Miss Scott was over bidding goodbye going to New York. Sailing Saturday She was the Smallest of the two that were here that night. She is a fine looking girl now. There are a lot going from around here on Friday. The sewing is very scarce so the girls have to go probably better for them. Liza is going to the shop now so must hurry & get this ready. She is not very well lately has a [sore?] side since [time?] Willie John was hurt she thinks she hurted herself then. I have been talking about her going up to the Dr [Doctor?] in Omagh to see about it but that is as far as it goes. If she would work till she kills herself here it wouldn't seem to bother them very much. John is working at a new house for Andy McClelland this last while. A week ago Sunday we were down in Lisnacreaght and Houston was there and Sandy also wheeled over Houston was inquiring about you. Sandy has got old looking I hardly remembered him [so?] long since I saw him. He thought I had got tall. Saw Willie Barker yesterday said he wouldn't know me atall [at all?] but remembered when I was only a little thing. Sandy said he remembered when I was as small as Madge. Must close Good Bye [Goodbye?] Mary. Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
