Transcript | [Front of envelope] J J Smyth Castledamph Plumbridge Co Tyrone Ireland [Stamped] ESSEX JU 5 03 ONT. [Stamped] Canadian Postage Two Cents [Back of envelope] NEWTOWNSTEWART AM C JU 19 [?] [Page 1] Essex June 5th,[02?] Dear People Well I think I have [sic] neglecting to write this last while I can't think when I wrote last. I was expecting to get a letter this last week running every night to the office but all for nothing. So I suppose when I get this posted I'll get one. I had a letter from Bella last week, I am anxious to know how she is getting along. We have lovely weather here now pretty warm but not very I was down to Woodslee on the 25th I forget whether I wrote since that or not. Fred Bennett's brother died Sunday morning last was buried on Tuesday he has been ailing quite a while he leaves behind him a wife and three children Well school will soon be at an end our holidays begins on the 24th. We are taking up manual training now carving clay modelling drawing scrolls & etc. It is very nice I will be able to carve when I go home [Page 2] Our teacher is a Mr Bengough he is just here for the two months May & June, He boards next door where Jim does. I got those examination papers of Lizzie's I dont think they are very hard of course I would have to study a little before [Sougins?] as some of the questions they never take it up here. I wonder if Lizzie got through. I suppose if she does she will be going to Dublin I have not quite decided what I'm going to do yet but I don't think I will come back here again anyway. I am getting to like Essex better every day I kind of hate to leave now it is so much nicer in the summer, and I know so many people around here. How is W. [Willie?] John getting along at school Does he attend regular? Is John Chs [Charles?] going to stay at home now or what does he intend doing. I suppose there is enough work for him at home if he would stay. I had a letter from Miss Ashfield last [Page 3] [sic] and had to pay 4 cts. [cents?] on it for being overweight She used some kind of cardboard instead of notepaper whatever she meant. I tell you I would just as rather not got it as have to pay [out?] 4 cts [cents?]. especially at that time. She dont seem to care very much for Henry I guess its because [Lemon?] was sent away & he sent in his place. She said [Lemon?] has been to the Plum [Plumbridge?] once since he left I suppose to see her I thought he would never think of her after he got away. She says the Campbells are putting on lots of style I wonder have they the means or where do they get it. How is Andy & Bob agreeing I suppose he will need to be pleasant for fear of Bob running away next. Does Mrs Nelson attend to the shop herself now. Has she as much trade as ever. I would think Louisa is too proud to gain much custom. And Lillie Moore has left the church [&?] gone to the [Dippers?] Well I would like to see her now she must [Page 4] [sic] changed quite a lot. I wrote to Maggie McFarland last week whe wrote to Jim sometime ago and told him to tell me to write to her. So I did at last. I may go down that way going home so I will keep up the correspondence. Is Father and Mother going to the seashore this year I think they should hire a girl for a few weeks and let them go, I also wish that they would get their photo's taken as I haven't got one, I'm often asked for them. I want to get a good one taken this summer the cabinet size if I have the money to spare. Can I have a little money to keep me going through holidays as Jim wont be making any so I can [can't?] expect any from him. How are they getting along with the new farm I suppose they have got the crops all in by now. Except the turnips. What about the turf? Do you get them over in [Coherney?] yet. I suppose Liza don't [sic] have to go now. No fun over there like what we used to have on Uncle James [sic] hill. Oh, I can't think of any more so Good Bye [Goodbye?] M [Mary?] Smyth [Written across top of page 2] Last Saturday there was a house went by here drawn by 20 horses. They put like wheels under them and takes them along. I was alone here in the house & I heard the great noise of the men calling to the horses & I did not know what it meant so when I went out I saw the house they moved it about 4 mls [miles?], and set it up about [200?] [ser?] from here That's something you never saw. [Written across top of last page] write soon & tell me all the news also let me know what Annie Mary calls her baby Uncle's folk want to know. Good bye MS [Mary Smyth?] Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
