Smyth Castledamph Plumbridge Co Tyrone Ireland Postmarked on Front:- SOUTHWOODSLEE ONT JU 24 02 Postmarked on Back of Envelope:- NEWTOWNSTEWART 5AM JY 4 02 South Woodslee June 22nd 1902 Dear Liza I was expecting a letter this week before I would write but I did not get it so I had to write today, Well it is drawing near to my exam only two more schooldays. Well now I dont know what all has happened since I last wrote I know I dont write very many letters but I ll pay up for it in holidays. Yesterday Miss Jenner was at Cass s and her and I went away to a Mr Smith s to see them raising a barn, thats when the [they?] get [those?] great barns all ready to put together they gather a lot of men to do it they had 39 men there yesterday I cannot explain how the barns are put up I did not know the least thing about it myself till I saw it. We had to walk I suppose 4 miles we did not go around the road we took all the near cuts we could. We got back here by night. We went to church this morning and we [brought?] Miss Roulston another school teacher up with us for dinner so we all went to Sunday school again and they [stopped?] in the village So now we are alone. Jim was down Sat: week and he came down yesterday afternoon and went again in the train so I did not get a sight of him. I got my black skirt it is very nice made It sits so well that it is the first skirt that has pleased me. I wore it today for the first. Well you never said in any of your letters whether you were cutting the turf yet or not but I suppose you have them almost ready for stacking by now. This is cold weather for June. Some had on their coats today at Church. We had an ice cream social on Wed. Evg. [evening?] on the Church lawn and a programme afterwards it was very good I will send you the notice and it is all scribbled over with names. I expect you wont know what it means by ice cream but its a drink (or not a drink altogether) its cold and they use it here in the summer they mak [make?] it with ice, cream, and other stuff. It is just fine on a hot day 3 Cts [Cents?] a dish the girls [treat?] each other to ice cream. I am going out to Leamington after the exam, for a few weeks they are going to have a great day there on the 1st July I will try and go for that, How is Bella and Davy getting along. I don t hear very much about them, that Photo has not come yet I would advise them to just get the head and shoulders taken. I was telling Jim that we should get Father s picture enlarged like Uncle s one of [one?] that the [they?] have here, but I dont know what about it yet. I would like to get mine taken now just to see the diff [difference?] but I have not got the [tin?] I have not came to consideration yet what I m going to do after holidays if I don t pass I think I will goto [go to?] business College and if I do I may go to High School for a year or so. If you would find out how one that is a bookeeper, typist, and shorthand is paid I would be very much oblidged. [obliged?] I am almost sure that it is the same as what Miss Cole s Sister had and she was getting as much as Sarah. I don t see why they couldn t pay them as much there as here. Well I will soon have to finish as it is 6 o clock and I have to get ready for Church The Sunday evgs. [Evenings?] are lonely here only for going to S. [Sunday?] School. It would be worse. [Private (written on a slant)?] (I was promised a buggy ride today on a new buggy with rubber tyres his [name?] is (John(Jack) E. Hancock) A nice little fellow. It is not for anything every one wants to get a ride in the buggy it is an odd one about here and of course he is very up to date. also. Well I see it is a little bit lonely there too, Does J. Mc and Bob never go up now atall. [at all?] I have not got a letter from them this long time. What about Andy Mc and Andy J. I sometimes think I would like to write to them to hear what fun they have about there. I wonder will A. Mc be married before I go back I would just like to hear him laugh. Is Alex still a shepherd, I will soon be a year out here it seems a long time in one way and another it don t. How is McCreanor doing and uncle James people McKelvey s and Nobles & Reids I don t hear any thing about them but I know that Jane has lost Tommy. Poor thing Maggie McKernan may be kept at the Plum [Plumbridge?] now with the saddler, I was looking at [Willie s?] handkerchief that he gave me the other day. I was just thinking if I would be seen here with one as drunk as he was that I would be Oh I dont know what, I see the other McKernan s are going to the [bad?] too. [They?] are a pack the whole of them. If I was Bob I would leave [there?] altogether for he will never amount to anything there. But I suppose they could not want him very well. I was thinking on the 12th what kind of a day you had and I suppose the next 12th I will be thinking I dont know where I will be that day. Give my love to all enquiring for me and tell them I would like very much to be there Good [Bye?] MS [Mary Smyth?] (Written Upside down Top of Page One) Write and give me a full account of all about it everything and everybody. I mean the 12th July. I would like to just have [another?] day like the last riding on the Car and the flag flapping around me and then the fun in the field I suppose it will not be the same again Good Bye |
