Transcript | [Front of Envelope] Mrs. J. J. Smyth Plumbridge Co Tyrone Ireland [Stamped] [SOUTHWOODSLEE?] 03 ONT. [Back of Envelope] NEWTOWNSTEWART AM AU 17 03 [Page 1] Sth. Woodslee, Aug. 6th. 03 Dear People I think it must be quite a while since I last wrote I forget when. I’ve always been putting it off from day to day untill [until?] it goes too long. I am expecting a letter tonight as I have not got any since two weeks tomorrow. Well we had our annual Sunday school picnic yesterday down at the lake. We all went but Uncle and Aunt, Belle and Annie and Lesley went in the buggy and Glenn & Willie & Charlie and [Page 2] & [sic] his sister in law (Mrs Allison) & I went in the democrat with two horses. We had a very good day There was a shower of rain when we were going but we drove into a shade and did not get wet but others were wet through those that could not get in any place. Annie and I and two other girls went in to the water and had lots of fun. As I told you about making my bathing dress. Every one was admiring it yesterday, I don’t think it will look as good now. I was learning to swim but couldn’t do it. We were in about an hour. I feel a little tired today but not much. Over time I want to try [Page 3] to swim on my back but got down under the water and the rest of them had to get me up. It was only about up to our waist but I never kept my mouth closed so I got choked. I was just thinking of James Joe Duncan as I was glad to get hold of anyone. I would have got up alright enough. We got home here about 10 o’clock Today Annie and Charlie and the boys are gone to Leamington to visit their friends there, Charlie is going back to work Monday. Sarah went away Tuesday. I must tell you the crowd that was here Sunday. Gertie Paddon & Mr Totten from Windsor Jim, Sarah, Fred’s Charlie’s & a Miss [Coboe?] [Page 4] just twenty in all Jim went to Essex Monday morning & Belle & I washed with assistance of the rest in carrying water & I & Gertie Paddon & Mr [Totten?] did not leave till eight o’clock Monday night, We had some fun playing croquet in the afternoon. Annie & I and (Gertie and Mr Totten:) Chums. had a game. Sarah was up a few days with Joe in Cleveland he is getting along well. Jim had a paper from home Monday & had to pay 2 cts. on it Say will you be able to lend me the money to go to Business [Page 5] College, Annie says that I can go to St. Thomas B. [Business?] College & stay there. That would’nt cost so much just now anyway. I could pay her back in the future. If you can spare the money send it as soon as possible as I have to pay it all on entering. about £15 would do I [expect?]. How is the baby getting along I suppose it will be growing fast. I have never heard its name yet nor when it is going to be christened. I suppose they will hate to go up before all and have it christened [Page 6] I suppose Willie John will have his holidays now. Why don’t he write a few lines when he has nothing else to do? Uncle has all his hay in now soon commencing to cut the oats, I suppose they are green over there yet. The hot weather is nearly all over it is hot enough yet but not so hot as it was some time ago. Aunt and Uncle are at a funeral today. Uncle is one of the pallbearers. Belle and I are alone [here?] She is just finishing ironing. I got down my violin Monday I was playing a little Monday night. I have almost [Page 7] forgot all I knew it is so long since I played. I have’nt played much since I came out here but I think I will start & practice up. If I could get some lessons on it I would take it but there is no one around here to give lessons Well holidays will soon be at an end about three more weeks & work begins again. I was dreaming the night before last that Bella was dead so Belle says that is another marriage I hope not till I get back give us time to get there anyway and not have it in a hurry. I had a letter from Maggie [Page 8] McFarlane some time ago. and she was asking about you all And about JC. [John Charles?] she said she remembered him a little fatty. She has two children now living on a farm 11 milk cows, and I forget what else she told me. She wants me to go & see her before I go home. She thinks Robert [sold his hen on a rainy day?] when he let Barness go, but I suppose he was glad to get out of there. How many of a family has John McFarlane [McFarland?] now? Well I think I had better close this scribble & get it posted it is five o’clock now so mail goes at 6’ Please excuse abruptness Hoping you [are?] all well Good Bye M. S.
