Transcript | [Front of Envelope] Mr. Jas. A. Smyth, Essex, Ontario, [Stamped] ST THOMAS 16 JUN 10 04 ONT. [Back of Envelope] [Stamped] ESSEX Ju 11 04 ONT. [Page 1] St. Thomas, Box 11 June 9th 04 Dear Brother.. I thought I would write and send you the programme today so as you will have it by the time it is going on. Annie had a letter from you today. I don't know what notion she took to write to you. As regards Friday night. She (Miss Resdon) is not going to entertain the orchestra Sat. night as some of them can't be present. I don't know when she will now. I think I will go up Wednesday anyway. Well, I spent all the money [Page 2] you sent me and ten of what I had in the bank so there's how it goes. I got a new dress & I think my music & books cost quite a bit as she [gave?] me some to study alone. We had practice yesterday afternoon on the opera house and we will have another today She wants me to lead the seconds in the first piece, Long symphony, but I don't know whether to or not I have never been up before a crowd and I would have to sit at the front though there would be others there too. I will give you a list of the names, Hindmarsh plays the cornet H. Wigg the [base? viol [violin?] Miss Stell [Stella?] Resdon the cello. Miss A. Marlatt the viola. [Page 3] Nearly all the others play 1st, 2nd violin some of them have [-----?], like the cuckoo & quail, in the 1st piece & they are not in the others atall [at all?] I think it is going to be very good. I would have liked if you could have come to see it. I have sold thirteen tickets for it and some of the others have sold three times as many so I expect there will be a crowd I think I will make this do for now as I must get ready to go for practice We certainly have had enough outings this last two weeks but it will soon be over. Good Bye, M. [Mary?] Smyth. [Page 4] June 10th As I did not get this letter posted in time yesterday I thought I would finish it up today. Well, our concert came off splendid. Annie was there & she thought it was very good so it must have been. Gertrude Huntley’s pieces were fine. She certainly can play I wish I were as good as she. Miss Resdon gave her a lovely bouquet after she played the last one. We sat in our places after we played the second piece until the third. and we saw her play her last. That Miss James [Page 5] is a good reciter and she is also very pretty. The Indian Drill by [Sen?] boys was the most comical of all. They were dressed up in all colors and had their battle axes & everything, it was good. We did not get home until after 11 o’clock they [the?] programme was long. There was quite a crowd so I expect it will also be a financial success. I had better close as I have to write home today GoodBye M. [Mary?] Smyth. Transcribed by Brendan Valentine |
