Transcript | Battle Creek Mich [Michigan?] Jan 31. 1910 Mrs John McKenna Garvagh Ireland. Dear Sister:- You no doubt will be surprised to hear from me I have been very busy ever since I received your letter but I intended to write you ever since I reached home. Now we are all quite well and hope that everybody in Old Ireland are enjoying the same blessing. It is with a sad heart that I have to tell you that my dear brother Father John Brogan passed out of this life on Friday Jan 21. 1910 at 11.30 pm As you know Father has been in failing health for five years. He had to resign the charge of the parish, and he was made Chaplin of the Sisters of Mercy at Marshalltown & Iona, and it was at this beautiful place, and under such pleasant, and holy surroundings that dear Father passed away. I had been to see him on Dec 7 and I thought he was quite well but the change came shortly & I had letters from the Sisters and I can assure you that I have always done all in my power to make his last year happy. He was sick about four weeks I got a telegram that he was dangerous, and I with my daughter Nellie left at once for to be with him when the last end came. I assure you that poor Father was glad to see us. He died two days after we reached him it is over 500 miles from Battle Creek He was buried with all the honours there being two funerals one in Marshalltown, and then we took him about 200 miles to Dubuque whear [where?] he lay in state in the Cathedral all night and on Wed. the 26 the last sad rights [rites?] took place Archbishop Kane officiated. there were about 100 priests present Dear Father was laid to rest in a beautiful spot in Dubuque. I would have liked to take him home to Battle Creek, but he requested to be laid to rest with his brother priests in Dubuque. Now I will kindly recommend Father to your kind prayers. And May God have mercy on his soul. I will draw this sad letter to a close. and hope to hear from you soon I remain as ever your brother P. Brogan 188 Cherry St. Battle Creek Mich [Michigan?] P.S. Tom Kirk was at the funeral at Dubuque. |
