Transcript | Letter from William Stavely, Nationa, [U.S.A.?] to an unknown adressee named James [the correspondent's brother-in-law]. Nationa May 28th 1867. Dear James, My last was written you March 30th acknowledging receipt of last remittance. I then stated I would write you in about two months, the interval has not been attended with any very particular event, untill [until?], 15 minutes past 12 o'clock yesterday morning when we had an addition to our family in the birth of a son. At this writing forty hours after the mother and child are doing well. Please communicate this information to my Sisters, not that it is of any importance, to any person but ourselves but female curiosity must have changed in the past 25 years if they do not desire to know all that is going on. Martha is quite Stout and will soon be able to get up, any members of my family at home are in the usual health. Hannah Thompson was well on Thursday evening of last week and Joseph Hind was in good health on Friday. I expect him home for a few weeks vacation next week Margaret (Mrs Alexn [Alexander?]) has been very unwell, she is now better, and hopes to soon be well. I consider her a very superior woman, one whose family will yet arise and call blessed. In my own immediate sphere their [there?] is little to mention, would interest you. Trade has been unusually dull all over, The Penn and Salt Mf [Manufacturing?] Co. [Company?] can not sell their manufactured goods so fiercely as usual. Consequently their improvements are not so numerous as usual. On the other hand, the population of this place has increased and as I am to keep up a well assorted stock, at market price, of everything usually needed from a sick [di-ss?] - down to a draped sheep skin, for a Blacksmiths apron I manage not only to retain but also to increase the business, so that this month will here after be considered as it is the best we have ever had Flour has been much higher in price this Spring than at any time since I have been in America, best brands sold recently in Pittsburgh at $20. 50/100 per barrel. It is now a Shade lower in price. Yesterday a mule ran off at the works. The driver aged about 21 fell under the cart and is dead today truly in life we are in death. I read with much attention from time to time, of the wholesale expatriation of my Country men from their native land - Surely in the retributive justice of God the time has #PAGE 2 nearly arrived, when even on earth there will be a day of reckoning with the Aristocratic but pauper Landlords of Ireland and their hangmen Agents. I may not live to see it, but I will die under the firm conviction the day is not remote when such opressors [oppressors?] shall be swept from the land. With best wishes to Ann and your numerous family I am Your affectionate Brother William Stavely |
