Friend Robert
I received your welcome letter and was very
much pleased to hear from you, and sorry to hear
that you have such bad weather in the old country.
I took your card over to the Lodge, and they
would not give me a clean card for you as they say
that you must pay right along, but if you say so,
I will pay for you, and have it all right. Things
in New York are very good from what I hear and see,
if you had stayed here, I could have you working for
Van Doran now, Jinks is working in the [Sl---?] and
J. Rutan, is at Jordan in the Sailor's home.
Send me a shamrock and a piece of the old country
sod. I wish I was with you Robt [Robert?] drink
that old ale and porter, but when you come back we
can drink lager beer again. The wife lost her
father, he died Nov 7th 1892, after being sick for
about six weeks, he said one night, when he was very
low, that he wished he was in the old country, and he
would not be laying in bed. Alex is going to be
marry on the Dec 18th 1892 to Mammie Durdan.
I hope you will have a good time and improve your
health, while you are in the old country. Hoping
to hear from you soon I remain
Your Friend
Jim Swan
P.S. All the folks are well and enjoying good
health here, and hope you are doing the same, and
send their best wishes to you,
Jim
