My Dear Mother Brother & Sister
I now write you a
few lines to let you know
that Aggie & I are both
quite well hoping this to
find you all at home
enjoying good health
I have got my orders to
proceed to Portland which
I am sorry for I would
of liked to load here
as we like the place & people
very much I will sail
tomorrow & hope to arrive
in Portland in 30 days
this is a great place for
sailors knocking off duty
they dont like filling coals
I have got along pretty well
with my men left one in
hospital paid one off &
one run away I have still
my complement so that
I will not have to ship
any here as men are very
scarse [scarce?]. Capt. [Captain?] Barkly has
five off duty they wont
work, have no fault to
find either with Capt. [Captain?]
or ship but wont work
Aggie & I were up in town
with Capt. Barkly yesterday
& met Mr. John Barkly
he looks well & wishes to
be remembered to you all
I hope that Cooleen will get
a good charter home I expect
that she will go to Portland
if she dose [does?] not load here
times are very dull here
at present but I think
markets are rising, I was [offered?]
the other day 25/- U.K.
not much in that I dont
know if we are fixed yet
or not if so I hope that
it is something better than
that I see by the papers
that you are having a
lively time of it in
Belfast I hope by
this time that all are
quiet again I hope
that business is good
with you. Give our kind
love to Mr. & Mrs. James Barkly
hoping that they are all well
We hope that dear old Mother
is well & that we will
be all spared to meet again
Give our kind love to your
Father & Mother in Carrick hoping
they are well we also
hope that dear Aunt Jane
is well also all the children
remember us to the people at
the Cottage I have very
little news to give you
but hoping to hear from
you in Portland. We
remain dear Mother Willie
& Jane your loving
Ralph & Aggie
