Transcript | Athenaeum London Aug 4/48 [4th 1848?] My dear friend I have been over here for the last week on business of importance the nature of which you may guess from the enclosed: but I find it very hard to get money now for any Irish object - people are thoroughly disgusted with Ireland - & if the potatoe [potato?] should again fail this year, I do think that English sympathy will be found to have entirely dried up - I am going today to Brussells [Brussels?] on a visit to the Burgundian Library - I shall probably be absent about a week - & on my return I have some thoughts of going to Glasgow - but I fear my projected trip to the isles of the north must be abandoned this year - I wish we could have just such a trip, & with the same party that we had last year - but I must return to Ireland before the end of this month - & I am under an engagement to go to the south to a friend who wants my help in a matter of some consequence which I cannot refuse to give him - With Kind regards to Mrs Gage, Robert & all the young ladies I remain yours very truly [-?] Todd I see that the new Bp. [Bishop?] of Cork was consecrated last Sunday - [?] [?] is going to print the sermon he preached on the occasion. |
