Transcript | [No envelope] [Incomplete letter] [Page 1] South Woodslee Oct 25 1900 Dear Uncle Aunt and Cousins Suppose you will have got Jims letter before this reaches you he will have told you that we got home all right but were very tired I was a great deal more wearied than going [over?] suppose it was cumming [coming?] on the cars after the boat. We were eleven days on the boat we left Moville on fifth about three o'clock and landed in New York the sixteenth about half past eight the difference [difference?] in the time would make just about the eleven days we were [Page 2] two weeks all but one day from me left Frendraught until [until?] we landed in Woodslee. We had a beautiful morning leaving Frendraught and all the way until [until?]we were nearly down to the Ship then it began to look like rain we had just got on the ship when the rain came on it was just showery the rest of the day We were able to stay up on deck and have a last look at the Hills of old Ireland thought I would be able to stay up and see it as long as day light lasted but my Stomach got the better of me and I had to go to bed was sick long before we were out of sight [Written sideways on right side.] of land [Page 3] and Sara was casting up her accounts long before I was I did not get on deck again Until [until?] sunday afternoon and Sara not till tuesday nearly everyone on board was sick the Ocean was very rough until [until?] monday night the rest of the time was not so bad untill[until?]the sunday before we landed it rained all day and the sea was quite rough Sara was sick all day and I had to lay down most of the time to keep the fishes from getting my breakfast the first few days was quite cold but after we got about half way on it was nice and warm the saturday before we landed could sit on [Page 4] deck without any wraps on Monday the day before we landed was a beautiful day we sighted land about two in the afternoon (and we were not going to see it either) were in to quarantine about seven in the evening had to cast anchor and stay there all night - the [Dr?] came on board in the morning and found no sickness so we were allowed to land we did not have any trouble getting through the customs there did not have to pay any duty I had to pay duty on the Belleek that I had cumming [coming?] into Canada [Page 5] that was all I had to pay on We landed in New York about half past eight in morning and left at noon came from New York to Bufallo [Buffalo?] in ten hours and a half about four hundred and fifty miles We came on the Leheigh Valley Rail road it is through the Blue Mountains a part of the Alleganyes [Alleghenys?] and the scenery through which it passes is grand some places remind me of Gortin Glenn [Glen?] only about as far again to the bottem [bottom?] of the ravenes [ravines?] as gortin and the solid rock about [Page 6] an [a?] hundred feet above on the other side just the width of the railroad cut out of the rocks, one place we were up so high could see right on the tops of the Mountains I was sorry when night came and we could not see anymore We got to Windsor about half past nine in morning had to wate [wait?] there for the evening train [Jim?] was at the train at Essex he was expecting us he did not come down with us but came next day it was Thanksgiving day and a holiday We were home just in time for Thanksgiving and thankful we were to get home all safe and well and to find everybody at home [Page 7] Well Mother had very good health all summer did the work alone part of the time Cassie and Baby Howard are well Howard did not know me but he was not long in making friends again I have not seen Glenn and Leslie yet Annie and Charlie were out on sunday but they did not bring them with them I was so disappointed [disappointed?] I was longing to see the little chaps Oct -29 I thought this letter would been quite a bit on its way to you by this time but did not get it finished as soon as intended. Wish I could just drop in and see you all suppose you are sleeping now it is nearly bed time here We are having glorious [Page 8] weather here now has been fine ever since I came home just about the same as you had in harvest and as warm to [too?] is raining to-night thundering and lightening [lightning?] how is that for this time of year Jim was down saturday he came to hunt but could not get a dog so did not do much hunting our dog is no use at hunting Jim was well pleased with the things you sent him they all suited him [Many?] thanks Bella for the night dress I think it is a beauty I got one in Derry for Cassie it is not near so nice as the one you [gave?] [Written at top of page 8] Is Alice Duncan still at home was it true that Beck was married Is Joe still at home I heard before I left that he was going back to the infirmary [Written upside down on Page 4] Remember still when far away that I am always Brown Transcribed by Chris Devenney |
