Transcript | Chicago 31 Mar 1850 My Dear Sir I have not heard further news of John since I sent you a paper containing a letter from California, in which the writer mentioned John along with many others from Chicago, he was then well. I think it likely I will see him, before I hear from him, as I intend starting for the mines with my brother Archy on 2nd April. I wish now to give you an account of Johns affairs which you will find on other side. When John left this, he left his affairs with me to settle. Before leaving he sold to our partner Bentley, 1/2 of his third of the canal boat Empire (each of us held 1/3) for $300 I left the other half in my charge, to sell before I would leave. this with my share made 1/2 of the Boat, which I sold to Bentley for real Estate & a note for $50 due in a year. This was the best trade I could do, as canal property has depreciated very much. There was no such thing as getting money for her for money is so valuable here at present on account of so many people going to California, It is worth from 5 to 10 pr [per?] cent pr [per?] month equal to 60 to 120 % pr [per?] annum & that on good security. John also sold his 1/3 of canal boat Cayuga to Bentley for $50 - this makes $350 due by Bentley to him. He left his interest in the lumber with me to settle, but a small portion still remains unsold which Bentley will attend to. I had intended to have sent you this money (that is Bentley's $350 & what was due him on the lumber, but Bentley has been unable to procure it, having been disappointed in some payments. He will however be able to get it before 1st May when he will hand it over to his brother Mr Cyrus Bentley, a lawyer whom I have appointed to settle up my business & a man whom I put every confidence in as a man of integrity, who will send you a draft on Liverpool for the amount as pr [per?] annexed statement No. 1. John holds an interest with me of 1/3 in the lots (or real estate) & the note of $50 dollars. The real Estate is situated in the city & I have given Mr A Bentley direction to sell it if he shd [should?] think it adviseable [advisable?] to do so or to hold it if best. When sold, he will remit you a draft for one third the proceeds of the lots & 1/3 of the note & also whatever is coming to John out of the unfinished business of the firm, but the last will not amount to much, as pr [per?] statement No. 2. I am sorry that I could not have sold out for cash, but that was thing [sic] impossible as money is so stringent. I have done my best for our Interests being locked up together what was best for me was best for him. I hope however that we will be more fortunate in the mines than we have been in Chicago. With kindest respects to you, Mrs Orr & rest of the family & with strong hope of soon seeing John in the mines I remain Yr [Yours?] most truly Thos [Thomas?] Warnock |
