Transcript | New York Tuesday Feby [February?] 7th 1860 My dear Brother I yesterday got yours dated Jany [January?] 5th and 13th I also recd [received?] two letters from Father of the 14th and 20th respectively. This was because the America made a very long trip to Boston and the letters did not arrive till [untill?] Saturday evg [evening?] too late for delivery. The City of Baltimore which sailed after the America arrived on Saturday with her bulwarks washed away and her cargo damaged she passed the C. [City?] of Manchester which I think is up to day. The Steamer "Asia" with Mails arrived on Sunday so that on Monday all these mails were delivered together I was glad to get all your letters and still more to find that you were all well I hope you will long continue so. It is pleasant to hear such good account of Mamma I hope her health will continue good. I myself am "first rate". We were rather busy here last week on account of a sudden invasion of Southern and western men. The feeling between the South and the north is rather bad on account of the slavery question. Some of the Papers in South Carolina published what they called a black list of all houses in New York with abolitionist ideas (we are not in the number) with these abolitionists the southern merchants are not to deal and they have carried out this principle to a far greater extent than you would imagine Some of them are very touchy on this subject and it does not do to hint it to them but I have heard others of them talk in quite a reasonable style about slavery considering it as an evil which they were however obliged to defend against northern fanatics. We are not so busy this week and Linens are not enquired for at all. Mr Small is rather gracious lately. he in my opinion thinks that he has cooked Wm [William?] Ewarts & Sons Goose and that the Track will soon be clear for Bennett & Adams. I hope for many reasons he will be disappointed. But perhaps his intentions are not so bad as he gets credit for he means to build up a great trade for Ewarts in Boston to secure the "cream" of which he gives himself credit for working with "apostolic zeal" The season for taking orders is over a month or more ago besides it would be worse than useless to show samples at advanced prices in the present overstretched state of this market I have plenty to do to keep my stock strait [straight?] here Since J Flemming comenced [commenced?] consigning his goods here he has sent us over 900 differently numbered lots which must all be kept separate and that of itself is no light job I have besides 3 or 4 makes of Linens. Damask Flemmings napkins & Cloths Shirt Fronts two other parties Hkfs [handkerchiefs?] and in white Goods. [Jaconets?] [Cambrics?] Tape checks. Swiss mulls Bishop Lawns. India Books & Brilliantes &c &c [etc.] The weather is very changeable here last week it was very cold with much snow whilst today it is mild & the snow all gone. There is occasionally ice in the river but as yet it has not seriously interfered with the Ferry boat There has often been good skating but I have had no chance at it since I returned from Philadelphia I have no news whatever to communicate and must besides close as it is mail time With kind rememberances to all whom you remembered to me in your last & Love to Mamma & all the Children I remain Your affect [affectionate?] brother Wm.[William?] Geo [George?] Weir P.S. Feby [February?] 11th I did not think this worth sending on Tuesday & kept it for to day. There is not much additional news. Yesterday I got a note of invitation to a [ground?] party which is to be in Joseph Stuarts on the 21st. I expect to go. We have not been so busy this week as last Yesterday morning and all of Tuesday night we had a regular hurricane part of our house was unroofed I send a paper which will give you some idea of the storm. I was 1 1/4 hours getting from the store home last night on account of the irregularity of the Ferry boats. Temperature yesterday during the storm 20 oo [degrees?] above zero. To day calm but very cold. There is skating if I could get away. I have a letter partly written for I [Collins?]. Wm [William?] Geo[George?] Weir |
