Transcript | Office of Secretary Fresno Volunteer Fire Department Fresno, Cal [California?] September 9th, 1890 My Dear Annie It is with pleasure I take the uppertunity [opportunity?] of writing to let you know that I am well at present hoping that this will find you enjoying the same blessing I have got something to tell you that will perhaps Interest you a little but very like you have heard it before now. I had two days vacation [last?] [month?] I had to go to Modesto on a business trip so as the expenses was very little more I thought I would go ever to Stockton & see Bella. I got there at 10 am & got them to wake her up I tell you she was surprised to see me we went down town together to the Antelope Hotel where she used to stop & stayed there until after dinner then we went down town & got a buggy & went out into the country about 10 or 12 miles for the first 2 or 3 hours she felt as if she was with a stranger but it amused me to see how she got over it towards evening & how she got her speech again we had a jolly old time the only thing was lacking was your presence to make it enjoyable I think Bella is worse than ever she was before she gave me some pretty hard digs now and again she wanted to find out a whole lot of me but some things I let her know & some I did not I did not feel the very best in the latter part of the evening as I had been up the two nights previous one of them we was up at a fire & the next I had to wait for the midnight train I would have liked to have stayed over another day if you had been there I would have taken a week regardless of consequences Bella has a real nice place she seems to like it very much she can talk in the praises of California now as good as anybody. she said she was going to write that night & tell you a whole lot about me I told her I did not care how much she said if she told the truth I was greatly dissapointed [disappointed?] in Bella I expected to meet a steady careworn Lady but instead of that she is still livelier than ever I enjoyed the trip very much meeting with an old friend & talking of the things of the past she says she shall never come to see me but I think she was teasing me I told her I should never come to see her again until you come out or I come with you she left me down at the depot & treated me in every respect like a lady .... |
