Transcript | Mr Thos [Thomas?] Wray Quilley and Parish of Dunboe To the care of Mr Daniel O Kaine Merchant Coleraine Ireland favor of W H Leslie Peterscreek March 26th 1821 Dear and Beloved Mother Brother and Sister I once more embrace this favourable opportunity of writing a few lines to you, from a far distant country but I hope that neither the distance of the Country nor my being absent from you Shall in any way draw away my affection from you and I likewise trust that it shall not in any degree lessen yours in hearing from me for there is nothing could afford me more pleasure than hearing from you at present, for I have not heard from you since I left you ------ this is now the third time that I have wrote to you, since I arived [arrived?] in Quebec, I wrote when I landed by the Dominca Packet, concerning our passage and safe arrival, and of my intention of going on to James and from thence to John, ------- I went from Quebec to Montreal in a steam boat (you may let Mr Blair and his family know that I seen Mr and Mrs Forsyth and that they were both well) I came from Montreal to New York which is about the distance of four hundred miles, and from thence to Sinhing [Shining?] vally [valley?] that is where I taught School before that I went to Pittsburg [Pittsburgh?] and when I left James when I went to Ireland from New York here is about three hundred Miles and from this to Pittsburgh about one hundred and twenty Miles, when I came I expected to find James there but he had gone on to Pittsburgh for to collect what money was comeing [coming?] to us there he had been Teaching in the School that I had taught in during My absence untill [until?] shortly before that, I came ------- I stopped there for some time and wrote to him and he came back shortly, when we got our affairs settled we started for Pittsburgh during our stay in sinhin [Shining?] vally [valley?] we Received a letter from Brother John Stating that he was well and still continuing teaching and that he would be very glad if that we would go down the river ------- Dear friends you can scarcely conveive how I felt after escapeing [escaping?] the dangers of the Sea, and on meeting withe [with?] a Dear brother in a strange land and likewise hearing from another never was a cool refreshing Shower to a dry and perch [parched?] land, or the shade of a neighbouring [hell?] from the heat of a burning sun, more acceptable, than these two were to me, as I said we went to Pittsburgh we were then on the notion of going down the River, but we were there some time before that the waggon that our trunks were on came on, during which time James altered his notion from that of going down the River, to the studying Physich [Physics?] and he has been at an Accadamy [Academy?] learning the lattir [latter?] now six months and is makeing [making?] a very great improvement and I joined School about fifteen Miles from Pittsburgh, where I now reside I have a very good School, I wrote John since I came here and I have Received an Answer from him since, he is still continueing [continuing?] on Teaching, likewise he says that he has got Married on the fifth of November to a young woman of Kentucky aged sixteen years of age, but he intends to Decline Teaching and join farming. -------- I must conclude (write me every opportunity and [?] do the same there are a good many of our neighbourhood here I received a letter from John Holmes since that I left him, John Camron lives on the road from where I live to Pittsburgh and is doing very well John Ross that mentioned us in his letter is well give my best respects to all enquireing [enquiring?] friends but in particular to My Uncle and Aunt Wray and family to Mr John Tate and family, and Mr John Cochran Senr. [Senior?] and family hopeing [hoping?] that these few lines will find you in good health as they leave me at present, thanks be to the giver of all good, for his mercies towards me --- no more at present while I remain your ever loveing [loving?] son and Brother Robt [Robert?] Wray Dear and beloved Mother, You may perhaps, and I have no doubt but that you will grieve about me on the account of my misfortune but dear Mother, do not for it was the hand of providence that ordered it to be so, and I think that it was the best thing that I ever seen I am now liveing [living?] as comfortable as nature could desire, and I hope that you are doing the same, I must conclude, I am also writing to John Wray no more while I remain your affectionate and loveing [loving?] son untill [until?] Death Ro.[Robert?] Wray |
