Mr Daliel Murphy,

Dear Sir
I received your kind letter Bearing date the 23 March
which gives us much satisfaction to find you are all well as this
levs [leaves?] us all at present thanks be to god for his care over
us your Brother John has left this part of the Country and is gone
out West about 2000 thousand miles from this part of the country he
was here with me a year ago and stopped with me a night and a day he
said he had all his effects packed and ready for the long journey Wm
[William?] was then in California he said that he had an account
from him sometime previous from that date he said that he was not a
very wise boy on account of him spend all his earnings foolishly I
feel sory [sorry?] for Wm [William?] that he is not a great dale
[deal?] wiser for he was a fine clevour [clever?] young man and wore
suits of clothes good enough for Earl O'Neill he left here in the
spring of 1852 for California John let him have 300 dollars along
with what he had himself he had good luck and arrived there after
the usual time of 28 or 30 day he hired out for 70 dollars a month
and bord [board?] and his weages [wages?] was advanced to over 100
dollars per month. John promised he would write to me after he would
settle down at his journeys end I had no account since that time but
what I received from his wifes friend in the Little Falls She said
that his youngest child a daughter about one year old died on the
way going and his wife since died I am still expecting a letter from
him I will do all I can to find him out and send you word. I am
getting along first rate here thanks be to god for his goodness to
us in spearing [sparing?] our unprofitable lives and bestowing upon
us good health and strength I purched [purchased?] a hauce [house?]
and lote [lot?] here which cost me 100 hundred pounds British Money
I am worth 5 Pounds British per Month I work pretty hard I worked
every day since I arrived here without the excepting of a single day
and besides a great many night I have often herd [heard?] when I was
to home in my Native Country that a great many walked about with
there [their?] hands in there pockets after coming to this country but I have
never saw any of them yet A man that is wise and industrious will
make plenty of money in this country A man wants to be healthy and
strong or he need not come here the summers here are extremely hot
and the winters piercing cold that it takes a stout man to get along
here though it never had any impression on me I feel as strong as I
ever did I way [weigh?] 12 stone Weight and that is as much as I ever wayed
[weighed?] I keep two cows here I was offered 100 dollars for them
this spring but I would not sell them one of them calved in the
month of January and the other in April I made œ16 Pounds british
last year and expect to make the same this year Butter brings from
20 to 25 Cents per pound here Mary has got three children Eliza Jane
Edwin and Margret. Robert McClure left here a year ago this spring
and bought a farm 7 miles from this place 60 acres which cost him he
1100 Dollers [dollars?] is out here 2 or 3 times a week Nancy got
badly hurt about three months ago she fell of the barn loft unto the
flour some 8 feet she fell backwards on her head and shoulders she
is recovering slowly Robert has two children Thomas. J and Frederick
he is getting along pretty well Robert sends his love to Father and
Mother brothers and sisters and also to every enquiring friend he
would be very desirous from his Father/ Archie Murphy and Wm.
[William?] Davis came to see me some short time ago the were in good
health Archy worked with a farmer and had 16 Dollars per months and
board he complained of his wife being sick all the time and talked
of going home he said that his friends were all well about New
Hartford/ Benjamin and family are all well nothing of any importance
has occurred here in some time everything seems to go in prosperity
no disease prevails among our community / I never was one hour sick
since I first arrived here thanks be to god for his goodness to us
all Mary feels bad about you not mentioning aunt Margret or uncle
James/ Mary sends love to uncle David and aunt Margret and all the
family Mary would be very desirous to now why sister Margret did not
answer her last letter/ she thinks that she never done her any harm
or if she did she would would like to know it she wounders [wonders?]
much that her name was not mentioned in the last letter that Robert
received from home she would be very glad to have a letter from
uncle David she would be glad to her how George McIvers family is
getting along she would be desirous to now how sister Margret
obtained that fortune you spake of in your letter we have still a
notion of going home to pay a visit to our Native land but not for
some time yet we are doing well at present but always have since we
arrived here so we mean to keep to it for some time yet and when we
have the desired some of œ400 we will pay you all a visit perhaps
god has otherwise ordained it and if he hase [has?] we are willing
to submit to what ever his pleasure may be I would be desirous to
now how Wm [William?] Kidd and Nancy and Family is getting along
give my love to every inquiring friend no more at present but
remains your affectionate Friend to Death
