Transcript | To: Revd G [Reverend George?] Kirkpatrick Ahoghill Glebe Ballymena Ireland favd [favoured?] by J.W. Armstrong Esq. From: Thomas Kirkpatrick Kingston [Ontario, Canada?]. 30 July 1834. My Dear George Mr Armstrong a Merchant of this place, going to your neighbourhood has kindly promised me to deliver this to you, I therefore take the opportunity of writing you a few lines, You have of course heard from Coolmine of our safe arrival at New York & this town, We had thank God an excellent passage and a pleasant journey home & found our dear little one well as also our other friends, but it has pleased God Since to afflict us Mrs Fisher Helens Mother had been for some labouring under a disease of the heart together with the infirmities usual attendant on an advanced stage of life. She was sometimes better & sometimes worse on the night of the 28 inst she Retired to bed in the room adjoining ours as usual & in the morning we found her cold and stiff just in the attitude of sleep, having most probably died soon after she fell asleep - this was of course a great shock to poor Helen, but we trust that she was removed to a better world, she was a truly pious & good woman & knew & felt for some time past that her hour was at hand. I regret to say that the Canadas are again visited by that dreadfull [dreadful?] Scourge the Cholera had several alarms from it early this Summer but it did not break out with any degree of virulence until last week. it is supposed that it is brought on by the great heat of the weather, such a continuance of it has not been known for many years, the thermometer has been 95 in the shade both here & at Quebec #PAGE 2 & has generally been above 80 for this month past - Report says that 50 deaths a day have occured [occurred?] at Quebec, here about 20 have died in 3 days but I thank God we have now a cool breeze & the disease appears to be moderating. Stafford is still with us but intends setting off for Peterborough soon, you will hear from Coolmine news respecting him - the [---ts?] dear Catherine gave us for her sister have only just arrived by Quebec & have been forwarded to [D---?]. [Ma--?] is quite well & fat. Helen joins me in love to dear Kate & kiss your boys faces. Your affec [affectionate?] brother Ths [Thomas?] Kirkpatrick |
