SIR,
As the phenomena of nature
ought, in my opinion, to rank among
the first subjects that deserve the
attention of your readers, I herewith
send you, accompanied with a
graphic sketch, a description of
WIER'S CAVE, situated in the Blue
Ridge of the Alleganies [Allegheny?],
not far distant from Madison's Cave, in the
precipitous eastern barrier of the
delightful valley of Shenandoah. I
may probably be mistaken, yet it is
my opinion, so far as my reading
extends, that this cave has never yet
found a description in any of our
European Miscellanies; and, as it
claims such superiority in extent
and magnificence to Madison's
Cave, I am rather inclined to flatter
myself with the belief, that you
will conceive it worthy of a place
among the highly interesting subjects
that composes your tasteful,
literary repository. I am, sir, with
respect and esteem, your obedient
servant,
JAMES SYLVIUS LAW.
