Transcript | Dr [Dear] Robert, Banbridge Aug 9 1821 I received yours bearing date June the 9 last night which gave us all great pleasure to hear that you were stil alive and in health and in the same place I left a letter for you in Belfast last teusday [Tuesday?] wrote by Prudence and John, I stand all night in Mr Murrays they are all well only Miss Mary was very poorly the time I was there they had got word that Mr Riddle was to be over next month, send word with him, the day before your letter came there was two came from Mr G. Mchood [Mahood?] we are very glad he is so near you I hope you will still pay attention to his advice, we are all in a measure of health thanks be to God. John attended to the shop very well and is kind and agreeable with his sisters and pays attention to them at home and abroad and when he makes any money he can call his own instead of laying it out upon himself he lays little presents for them this gives great pleasure to his mother and me and it is a credit to himself. Lord grant he may continue to act in this noble manner. I am sorry to hear that you are not striving to save something for a rainy day, let our income be ever so small we ought to lay by a little as we know not how soon we may be deprived of health and the day of affliction come on it is then that we find the great use of having some little [torn] beg you will not join in the Volinter [Volunteer?] company you mention as it might make you neglect your buisiness [business?] and expose you to bad company - As to Miss Susan I am afraid you are too far North to take advice in that affair. this is the most serious and weighty concern in human life yet there is no concern in which many young men plunge so unthinkingly and by so doing many pass their future days ingloriously and die tormented. Remember a set of fine features and fair complexion are as incapable of blessing us or making us happy through life without an amiable mind and a religious disposition, as an affluent fortune when joined with a diseased body. you will find many claimants now demanding your heart, to secure it the world assumes its gayest blandishments and the fair sex exhibits all their charms, Satan is very active concerts his deepests plans among the rest JEHOVAH stoops from his radient throne and in the language of supreme authority and paternal love makes the solemn demand - MY SON GIVE ME THY HEART - if you value the advice of a loving father and friend let the demand of the last named CLAIMANT be obeyed before your enter into any connection that is to last for life, join yourself to no woman however fair or rich or wise unless you are fully persuaded that she has the fear of God before her eyes - and remember it is a very great SIN to draw on any young creature and keep company #PAGE 2 with them unless you intend to marry them, seek the Lord to guide you in all things and there is no fear but you will do well and that all things will work for your eternal good, The Fling is expected to land at Dublin this day, there is word in the papers that the Queen is very bad. We are in hopes of having a Church built in this town shortly the following is the P.S. of a letter I wrote last week. I fondly hope before three years expire That Banbridge Church will raise its glittering Spire And be adorned with a CLOCK and BELL This would delight me more than tongue can tell He that for this would not subscribe a GROAT On every Acre let his memory ROT. your Grandfather is still alive. it was the far side of the land we got the whole family joins in love to you. May the Lord give you grace and wisdom and understanding that you may know how to act aright in all things is the prayer of your loving father.
