Transcript | Belfast 9th Nov. 1819 Dear James, I recd [received?] your kind letter of the 22nd Sept. Jon [John?] [Curie?] & we were all glad to hear you were in Good health you remark my writing to Jas [James?] Brown, to know what you really were doing, as we are entirely ignorant how you are employing your time, this you may have mentioned in any of your letters & many have ask'd [asked?] the question but none of us can solve it, your remarks are very severe, but we must take more care in future how we make our remarks, & likewise you can save us the trouble by being a little more explicit, Geos [George's?] back was entirely up when he read, he did not know what to say, but I saw by his countenance he was much vex'd [vexed?], I am glad you agree with me in opinion that Jno [John?] was worthy of giving him your advice as you may depend I will be very cautious who I will [sic] any letters to - John is just return'd [returned?] & is going off in a fortnight to the same place, he is very fond of his situation & he was very lucky in getting such a fine Captn [Captain?], he always speaks very highly of John - when I wrote you last, I gave you a pretty good detail & nothing particular has occurred since, my letter went by a vessel from Derry, as I was just about half an hour too long going down, but the vessel went direct from Derry - this will go by the Hesperus as she will sail tomorrow - I have not seen Wm [William?] Tannihill since July. but I saw Wm [William?] & Archd [Archibald?] Thompson yesterday it being our fair day. I read many parts of your letter to them & they were obliged to me for reading that part about their Brother, if you happen to be at N. [New?] York shortly, try & find him if you can, I sent you his direction in my last [sic] least [lest?] you might have forgotten - I was at Mr Barbour's lately Glazing a new house for John, the old man is entirely off with America, he says he can't get any returns, for what has been there a long time, he was enquiring about you, & like the rest, asking, what kind of business you were carrying on - John Malcom is going off to Charlestown in the Prince Leopold, she is now in Port, Mr Malcom is left Lamb Cottage & has bought a small place near hand Mr Durham's, they are all well - Mr Patterson has give up Johnston's part of the [house?] & is [racking?] & altering his own part, he has set it to some poor person, so the Cottage will be no more in a very short time, we spent a very pleasant halloweve, it being on Sunday, however as usual Mr & Mrs Patterson, Robt [Robert?] & Jno [John?] Greer & Arthur Moreland Jr, were all the strangers we had, Mr Patterson proposed your health, which was drank in a Bumper - John Young, having been engaged by Mrs Coats a Month back we just wanted him, to have crown'd [crowned?] the old night, which we have always kept alive. |
