Transcript | To: John Martin [Downpatrick Area, County Down?] August the 10th 1785 Morland Township Philadelphya [Philadelphia?] County Dear father I take this opportunity of writing to you let-ing [letting?] you know that I am in good he-lth [health?] at present thank god for it hopeing [hoping?] these few lines will find you in the same I Recd [received?] your lutter [letter?] Bearing Dates the first of May which gives the Greatest Pleasure but hereing [hearing?] of my fri-nds [friend's?] Death Agreaved [Agrieved?] me much you seem to Reflack [Reflect?] on me not Giving a full Acct [account?] of this Co-ntry [country?] I cannot Give any further Acct [account?] than it is a plentifull [Plentiful?] Contery [Country?] any man that will work may have Victuals & money plenty as for my self I live at the same place still with a high Dutch Man I Get at the Rate of £25 [per?] year Meals Drink Washing & Lodgeing [Lodging?] as for Mowing Grass a man will Get 3s.9P [per?] Day & Mowing wheat 7s.6P a Day Mowing Oats 3S.9P Reaping wheat 3S.9P [per?] Day & a Man that undersand [understands?] farming Properly will Get 30 pounds a year Carpenters Ta-lors [Tailors?] & Masons Are Very Good Trades here & Beakers [Bakers?] Also As for weavers & Shoes makers there is no Trade for them Sceare [scarce?] at all as for my Self I Do better than I Could Do at Weaving by a Great Deal thank god for it I have not been at a loss for work nor Lost no time Scince [Since?] I came to America as for encorageing [encouraging?] Any person to Come here I will not but if Any of my fri-nds [friends?] or Acquaintance Comes I would be Glad to see them As Giveing [Giving?] Any further Acct [account?] I Cannot at present be pleased to to Remember me to all my fri-nds [friends?] & Acquaintance Mother brother & Sister above all be pleased to let Me know if Any my fri-nds [friends?] or Neighbours are either Dead or Married When you Derick [Direct?] Your letter Derick [Direct?] it to Ja--- [Jacob?] Summers store keeper Market Street Philadelphya [Philadeliphia?] So no more at present but I Remain your Loveing [Loving?] Son till Death Andrew Martin |
