Montreal 9th July 1850

Dear Madam

Your letter of the 1st ult & that of Mr Mackey's two (one of last
year) the the Book I rec'd [received?] Some time Since. I lost no time
in making every inquiry Respecting your late Husband Mr H. [Henry?] Johnson & I would have Reply Sooner to your letter but I can assure you it was no
easy business to get out any particular & loss of time having to go so often to the different parties & on calling on W Bready he informed me he had been Some Short time in his employ & not coming one day to work as usual he made enquiry at Some of his men & the answer was that he had been seen that day on the Street. The next account he heard that he was taken Sick of the Cholera, taken to the Hospital & died next day. The money found on him at his death was in the Hospital was one [pound?] 13/5 which was placed in the hands of the Mayer [Mayor?] for Safe Keeping & after
Repeated Calls & obtaining this am't [amount?] from his Worship the next
thing was to make out his Boarding House which I did & recd [received?]
his trunk. He Mr. Johnson [Stopped?] with a Mr. Bridgman a Respectable
man & his [wife?] deserves credid [credit?] the way She has preserved
Mr. J. [Johnson's?] clothes & I paid W B 3/9 their charges & which receipt I Enclose you with one pound 5/0 making 1/8-9 the [Balance?] is still in my
hands but could not get anything nearer to Remitt [remit?], I send this Letter by a Gentleman to Toronto. I forward you the Trunk etc last Saturday by the Atina Steamer as fare [far?] as Toronto & then to be sent forward to London to the care of Messrs Hope & Birrel as dericted [directed?] which I hope you all Receive Safe & when you receive the Trunk etc I will be glad to have a few lines from you acknowledging the receipt of the money etc etc. You having put the Book of Mr. Mackey and letters inside there was no less postage than one pound 4/0 on it but I get it Reduce to 2/6
