TranscriptNew Orleans July 22nd 1866

Dear Hugh,

I received your lines, you say
your father intends sending you to a
shop, but you prefer coming to New
Orleans. From the specimen of you chirography
and orthography, now before
me I judge you are poorly qualified to
go to a shop at home, and certainly
without a better education you are
unfit to come here for any other
occupation than labor [labour?] work.

Many a well educated person has to
labor [labour?] when he comes here, without
any friend before him, but if he has
good conduct he can advance himself.

The best thing your father can do
for you is to send you to a good
school for two years, Learn to write a
good free, legible hand, a fair knowledge
of english grammar, to spell correctly,
which I see you do not, Learn arithmetic
thoroughly. A little bookkeeping thrown
in would do no harm, With these
qualifications, serving a time in a shop
in Ireland would be so much time
thrown away, Were you thus qualified
I could get you into a store
here where you could learn as much
in a year, if you have capacity as
you would be serving a long time
at home. Let your father send
you to a good School and I will
pay the expenses. I do not wish
to see you here, without something
like a fair English education.

Your affectionate Uncle
Hugh McClosky
