Transcript | To: James McKibben, Belfast [Ireland?] From: Hugh McKibben, Norfolk [Virginia?] [U.S.A.?] Norfolk, February [5?]th 1795 Dr [Dear?] Uncle I take the opportunity of a ship going to Cork to inform you what I am doing by my letters from Cadiz you would find that I was a mate of a Brig belonging to Charleston but on passage home bound to New York we had the misfortune to Cast away on Long Island and lost our vessel and all we had in the world but what was on our backs from there I went to Philadelphia and was only two days there when I went out mate with Captain James Corry of your place in a Scooner [Schooner?] to the west indies we have made one voyage and are now loading to go out again ___ Dr [Dear?] uncle it was an unfortunate circumstance for me that we lost our vessel as we had got safe to Charleston I should have got the [Command?] of her But I am now in a good employ and Captain Corry is both able and willing to serve me you will excuse my not being particular as the opportunity I have of sending this is short but please God I get safe back to Philadelphia I shall write more fully and be able to [Remit?] something home if I have an opportunity Give my love to James and tell him to write every opportunity and be particular Dr [Dear?] Uncle it is so long since I heard from you that I am quite unhappy for fear things should not turn out to your expectation be so good as write to me the first opportunity no adds [address?] to what part of the States only direct to Capt James Corry Shipping Street Philadelphia __ Please give my love to all enquiring friends I add [more?] but Remains your dutifull [dutiful?] & affectionate Newphew Hugh McKibben |
