Transcript | The following letter from the Ballymacarrett artisans, who were sent out to Canada by the Emigration Committee, has been sent to the Rev. Mr Courtenay. " Toronto, July 22, 1842. Rev. Sir, We are happy to inform you that we arrived safe in Toronto, after a passage of forty-nine days, and are all in excellent health, thanks be to God for all his mercies unto us! We had on our passage two deaths, viz. James Peel's youngest child, and Richard Noble's child. The quantity of provisions your honourable Committee provided for us, before we left Belfast, gave us an abundant supply till we came to Quebec; and, we are also happy to inform you, that your letter to Mr. Buchanan, Government Agent at Quebec, was the means of giving us a passage and provisions up to Toronto, where numbers of us have already found employment. A few of our number found employment on our way up from Montreal to Toronto, which shall be mentioned in several letters to their friends at home. We have also much pleasure in giving your Reverence to know, that the Committee of Management you appointed in Belfast, for the distribution of the provisions, &c. gave general satisfaction, and endeavoured, so far as they could, for the comfort and benefit of all. We beg most respectfully to be excused for not giving your Reverence a more satisfactory letter with regards to the particulars of our voyage to this place, as we are in the hurry and anxiety of separating to our respective places of abode; but, in the meantime, we most respectfully return your Reverence and the Committee of gentlemen our sincerest thanks, for giving us the means of bringing us to a place where we will receive that remuneration for our labour we could not find at home. And will ever remain, your Reverence's obliged and humble servants. Signed by William Noble, Secretary; John Kirkpatrick, James Peel, William Reid, John Jamison, Isaac Bell, Richard Noble, William Gray, John Patton. The Committee of the Ballymacarrett Emigration Society." |
