TranscriptChulahoma Miss [Mississippi?] June
Mr Wm [William?] Hunter

My Dear Uncle
I will try to
write you a few lines to tell you how much
I thank you for your kind & welcome present
I cannot express my gratitude as I would like
to do tis [its?] so very kind of you to think of your for
[-----?] little fatherless neice you & my dear
aunt Ellen are the only ones of my relatives
that have been so thoughtful of me and I love
you so much for your kindness, the mony [money?]
was very acceptable I needed so many things
Ma, is very kind & indulgent but she is not
able to get many little things that I often need
badly, & will not spend my money foolishly for
anything that I do not need _ my brothers would supply
my wants if they could but they are so poor, & have to work
hard, I try to help them all that I can & get up nearly every
morning by day-light, cook [much?] & do what I can to assur [assure?]
Ma, her health is delicate I enjoy very good health I am growing
too fast unless I could be at School, tis [its?] mistifying [mystifying?] to
think of being grown, or a young lady, without an education
but we are so situated & see no way of improvement
we live in a very small village no schools no advantages
whether I would be delighted to go to school, the next 2
years I know that Ma will send me if she possibly can
we lead a lonely life I have few associates I have a cousin
near my age she is almost my only companion a
very pretty agreeable girl I often think of you & wish
to see you, how pleasant it would be to visit you, and
cheer you up in your hour of loneliness & so now
I was much grieved to hear of the death of my aunt
Ellen. I have the letter that she wrote me 3 years ago
will keep it for her sake we so much prize the
bow of ribbon & the little book that were our dear aunts
