Transcript | Donegal Arms 29th Sept. [September?] 1798 My Dear Father I wrote you on Tuesday night & [and?] have none of yours today-- I was brought up here yesterday with a number of others & [and?] this day gave in security -- Rob. [Robert?] Patterson 500-- Henry Rowan 500 & [and?] myself 1000 that I would leave the Country by the 12th October & [and?] never return, unless by leave of the Government - J. John?] Parks will not leave Dublin before Sunday & [and?] I suppose you will meet him here on Monday - a Lady who has Children at the Moravians was there yesterday, she tells me that there [their?] next receiving day is the last of October & [and?] that applications are so numerous, she thinks it will be difficult to succeed in getting Eliz th [Elizabeth?] there - the only way is to take her immediately & [and?] press them to take her, - the term is 14 Gs [Guineas?] per annum to be paid Quarterly before hand She shewed [showed?] me some work of a child of 5 yrs. [years?] of age which was most astonishing & [and?] she speaks in raptures of it altogether - Mr. Nath Magee who lives near Mr Stewarts [sic] of Ballydrain has two Thread Mills to sell, he begs when you come here, you may go out & [and?] view them & [and?] he will give you every information he is Master of , call and see Miss McCleans & [and?] others you will be judge of the price ----let the Girls make two large roomy Cheque [check?] Shirts for William at about 14 d. [shillings?] per yard -- I have two already I think from the price I hear my Uncle Jack has got for his house (50 Gs. [Guineas?] & [and?] 23Gs. [Guineas?] per Annum) that my aunts would surely sell well at any time - My Auction was this day, almost everything was sold & [and?] very well - I take out an excellent Hair Mattress with me, but thought it a folly to take out a feather bed - I had but three - one was sold some time ago - the other two now & [and?] tho [though?] one had been valued by the feathers at 13 d. [shillings?] & [and?] the other at 21 d. [shillings?] per lb. [pound?] the one sold at 18 d. [shillings?] & [and?] the other at 21 d. [shillings?] - so that everything did wonderfully -- I have applied tho' [though?] I know not yet with what success- for permission to go directly on board the Ship where I could have a perfectly free Communication with my friends & [and?] even keep you or any one else on board with me if I wished it - The American Captain has expressed a friendship for me & [and?] if you determined on sending Wm. [William?] I think I shall not have to pay a Passage for him------ yrs. [yours?] ever J. [John?] Caldwell On outside fold postmarked BELFAST: " Mr. Caldwell H. Hill Ballymoney" Also: " My Son John 20th Aug. 1798" |
