| Transcript | 19 Middle Gardiner St., Dublin. 5th July 1875. My dear Mama, I sent down a short memorial by Saturday's post to my father and suppose it reached [him] all right. I saw the result of an examination I went in for a short time ago, in the College today, in which I got a good place, though if the examination was what it ought to have been I think I would have got the prize. The whole examination was on one only of the six books prescribed, which was the one no one except a few that wanted it for another examination looked at, as the time for reading was too short, and I am sure the prize men knew as much about the rest of the books as a pig about a milestone. Some fellows were recommending me to go through College and take out the B.A. degree, as until I have that I can't, though able, take out the LL.D. degree, which of course I would like to do only for the expense which is £16 a year. The College course takes 4 years, but with good work it can be done in 2 years & 8 months, but the entire fees should be paid and the preliminary in College does for the King's Inns. If I were to do this, I should go home to Gleeson at once to prepare for October. I hope you will have a fine day tomorrow for the races, which promise to be very good. I know you were all sorry for the defeat of the Irish, which was principally owing to some of them having drunk too much at the College banquet the previous night, at which the Americans took nothing.
