(written on side of page) ( N.B. The 17« % Coms [commission] on 4/4 [returned?] amount 16/5 I did not charge, although I had [with?] them the [ordinary?] trouble of a sale ) Lurgan 10th March 1848 Mr. Joseph Searight, Philadelphia Dear Sir By yesterdays Post being the latest for tomorrow [Devinport?] Packet I sent forward a copy of your account [Earnest?] shewing a balance in my favor of 73:12:5 less 3/10 Error Noted on other side of this sheet. I had not the particulars of the sales as given overleaf ready to accompany the other document. I doubt not you will feel disappointed in the result of your linens sales. But a moment of reflection will probably suggest the fact that it was utterly out of my power or that of any one else to prevent the great reduction that has taken place in the value of both [ C M ] and yours - yarns nearly as good as T K Mulhollands 3/6 - and Mulhollands 3/7« P Bdle [per bundle?] though normally 3/9 - I know a buyer who bought 5.5 & 60 c 3/4« have news of sales @ 2/3 P [Per?] Bd [Bundle?] but [cannot?] vouch. In regard to linens I believe I could have secured a lot of 7/8 some time ago @ about 9d under [set?] and in regard to your own [7/8?] after they were delivered the whole bargain was nearly being upset unless I should submit to let them be picked which I firmly resisted and carried my point, though not without anxiety and trouble. As regards the 4/4 I sold them to a party not in the habit of buying, and had it been in any other way I believe I should not have done so well. The short measure, which is worst in the 7/8 I saw tried on service Webs before my eyes - Webs taken at random measuring 1 3/4 yds short - I think in general the longest lengths [crept?] in most. But I fear you measured them too exact at first. The former parcels of your cloth escaped, because not measured in taking them from me - But the party who [got?] [going?] before had charges against them for short measure, but I suppose were unable to trace the matter back to me having likely mixed them with other goods of a similar kind. But in the present case they measured them and took six pieces of each set for the average, and let me see some of them measured before taking them to account. I mentioned Mr. [Macouns?] affair with - M - e in my letter of yesterday - you must not as you value peace here, hint at the matter, but knowing how the case stands you can act fairly and accordingly. The want of this Balc [balance?] due me I must feel after a year of unprecedented loss to me, and some money of which I had the use I must nay - do for me, I beg you what you can, and soon Truly Yrs [Yours?] J Capper (written on side of page) The party who got the 4/4 put in at the bargain making that I should add 14.00 at the same rate if required, and has since been asking me for them This my own affair however. |
