Transcript | Lurgan 27th April 1848. Mr Joseph M Searight Philadelphia My Dear Joseph Your letter of the 4th March Covering Miss Richardson Watson has left on Miss Richardson. Another has (first of exchange) for œ30 dated 3rd April non-payable sixty days after sight is to hand this morning, and by which I am much obliged. The note of sales of your Cloth which was all but away when I posted my letter and [account?] on 9th March I held over to enclose in the letter of some of our friends - But not having a convenient oppertunity [opportunity?], I intended these several last months to post it myself but again and again omitted posting till too late in the week. The Packets leave Liverpool every Saturday now and the letters have to leave this on Thursday. To be early this week, I posted my letter to you yesterday (Wednesday) and what I thought might seem thankful also is realized then-yours to hand the day after- arguably so. My poor wife is not quite pleased with your note being so dry. You certainly might have told us how you are, and given us a little sketch of what is going on around you. I suppose you hear by the papers how matters are going on in Ireland. The "Confederates" or "Young Irelanders" have been avowing their Rebellious and reasonable Purposes without any covering over of them. Mr Mitchell ( an attorney) in the most bitter language defying the Lord Liuetenant and Challenging him to do his Worst. Three of these Smith O Brien MP Mr Meaghan + the above named Mitchel are to take trial under a state Prosecution 12th May [next?] There is about 30,000 Soldiers in Ireland at present Dublin has been in great jepordy [jeopardy?] of late- I think however we are likely not to have an outbreak at present. While trade is very dull provisions are low except potatoes. Prime oat meal 10/6 & down - Indian meal was lately selling at 7/- but is now bringing 7/9 & 8/- but this is but temporary for it is constantly changing- Potatoes are in such demand for England & Scotland that they keep up to 5/10 & 6/ for cash - last and present months have been very wet and cold - the Spring is therefore late - But the Weather is getting dry again- now you might be uneasy about John Rice on receiving my letter of yesterday I shall just post this now for Saturday's Packet and have time to say no more But remain yours truly John Capper PS about a further remittance I can say nothing. You know my neccessity and I am pleased you will do all you can and as soon as you can for Yourself Lurgan Ap27 1848 Paid Mr Joseph M Searight Care Mr Massy Corner of ninth and arch street Philadelphia Dr Mr Joseph M Searight in of Cut with John Capper Coutia Cr 1847 June 9 In balance 1847 as Furnished nett 368 " 2 June By omission or error in former a/c July 16 In Cash Pd my accept 50 " " By allowance For yarn short ruling 12.0 Aug 5 In Ditto Pd Do 74 10 " " By allowance for temy [temporary?] Do intend @ 7/«% old own for to 10 May 1848 bought as Cash fund œ 492 10 2 " " Cloth merged in Commission a/c 7.1 " 336 days on 25 8 1 " " Error in œ368.0.2 Interest acct 1.0.0 " 299 days on 3 1 5 " " 336 days 50.0.0 interest on 11.8.4 charged " 279 days on 4 5 11 too soon 15.8 74.10.0 " 1 7 " " 336 days Fares in on 1.18.3 Posterages to Bills 2.9 2 17 6 & from Pdown [Portadown?] & in Belfast JMS 7/8 JMS «/4 1848 " Error in " " 10 feb23 " Sales of 399 8 8 Cash Interest% Cloth to the date ( all your stock)pay net July15 " Balance " 2 " 10 " 90 days of Proceeds interest to Bill 10 May on 76.10.0 œ220.0.0 1. 8.0 75. 2.0 75. 0.0 1848 Mar 9 " Carriage 218 lifebs " 10 " " being part of the yarn" recd [received?] for Clothing " " Postage " 2 " " Cash at this date 4 1 4 " " Reduction on yarn sold to cover œ 52.0.5 being debts 2 3 4 Mar11 " 61 days " 16 3 other than yarn on œ65.0.0 c 10d same as last item Remainder of yarns reckoned in Cash 10 May Part of it not yet recieved " " " 1847 Aug18 Cash 45 " " " " 266 days to 18 May 1848 on œ45.0.0 2 9 2 Mar9 " Balance due J Capper in Cash 10 May 1848 73 12 5 œ528 5 4 œ 528 5 4 Paid Mr Joseph M Searight Care Mr Thomas Massy Merchant Tailor Corner of Ninth and Arch Street Philadelphia |
