Transcript | To Hasenclaver, Bewicke, & Tinmerman, Cadiz, 18 August 1756 Gentlemen: Our late Worthy Friend Mr. John Porter & his partner, Mr. Mierop, last Winter wrote our W. Cunningham to advise you the Currency of this Market, making use of their name, which we now take the liberty, & to make you a tender of service here. Since War has been declared, there is a great Number of Privateers fitted out here, so that we have great reason to expect prize goods of all sorts will be Sold reasonable. At present, there is a Cargoe of Martinieo sugar which sells at 3 to 7d per pound, Coffee 8d to 81/2. & Cotton 1s/4d per pound. We dayly look for oiher prizes which no doubt [will] be sold more Reasonable. To hinder the french being supplyed with provisions, there has been an Embargo on them for a long time & is very like to Continue. The Crops of all sorts is very large here which makes us hope the price of wheat & flower will be reasonble next spring. In case the bearer, Captain John Nealson, has Occasion to apply to you, we must [beg] your Assistance to him. He Owns with us the Vesel & Cargoe he has now under his Care. Exchange to London, £185 this Currency for £100 Sterling Wheat, 5s per bushell, about 60 pounds Flower, 14 per Hundredweight of 112 bees Wax, 2s/2 per pound Pitch, 12s per barrel Tarr, 12 per barrel Turpentine, 12s per barrel But staves. £8.0.0 per thousand pipe Ditto, 6.10.0 per thousand Hogshead Ditto, 4.10.0 per thousand Barrill Ditto, 3.0.0 per thousand Red oak Hogshead Ditto. 3.10.0 per thousand Rice, 14s per Hundredweight Cadiz salt, 5s per bushel per favour of Capt. Nealson |
