Transcript | To John Potts, [Belfast] 24 November 1756 Sir: We are favoured with yours of the 22nd August & 14th September & observe the Contents. Your Books is Sold at 120 per Cent advance on your Invoice. But the two Last [were] Invoiced at £7 5s Od which wont bring as much Currency as they Cost Sterling, so waits your Directions what to do with them. A part of your Box of fine Linnens is well sold, [but] two pieces are Damaged. Shall Leave nothing undone to put of[f] the Remainder. Your Coarse Linnens shall examine into to morrow, being safe arrived, & if well Bought, shall give you satisfaction in the Sales. Tho we shall warn money in Europe, we Dont propose to draw any on you for the Flaxseed you have ordered, if we can avoide it. We have taken Freight at the Currency to Newry in the ship Waddle, Charles Stewart Master, for one Hundred Hogsheads of Flaxseed about 28/6 Brittish Sterling per Hogshead, which your to govern yourself by if you see proper to Insure. She is a fine Vessell. We are Very Sorry to Inform you the Flaxseed trade is carried on here with the greatest imprudence which makes us Ship for our Friends with great Reluctance, as we think there will be a great Loss on the trade. But we dare not goe from positive orders, Least it might take another turn then we expect. The price is now 5/6 per Bushel & we expect will soon be 6s per. Your Brother is gone to Carolina. It wont be in his power to make any Hand of your brothers affairs as the part of the Country that was most in debt to Mr. James Potts Estate is interely Ruined.
