Transcript | To Robert Callwell, Belfast 13 January 1757 Sir: We are favoured with yours of the 1st September & observe the contents. We must assure you that the Flaxseed we shiped you last Year was good & that we had no complaint from any Person of the Quality of our Flaxseed but yours, which surprizes us much, as you had the common run. We have purchased Two Hundred Hogsheads of Flaxseed for your account, which we have kept for the Lord Russell till we now almost dispair of getting them shiped to you, as we now give over all thoughts of her this Season, & we cant yet meet a Vessel to go in her place to Belfast, nor do we know when we shall or if we shall be able to get one this Season, so that her Owners has hurt us & our Friends very much by their foolish method of sending her out so late in the Season, which we often cautioned them against. To make sure of getting a part of your Flaxseed to Market, we have this day taken Freight for One Hundred Hogsheads of your Flaxseed in the Ship Union, James Creathorn Master, who will be clear to sail for Dublin by the 25th Instant, & by that time we hope to advise you how you are to have the remainder shiped. If we had not bought what Flax seed we intended for you before we received your last Letter, we shoud have deferd it. Your to observe the Flaxseed will stand about 28s/6 Brittish per Hogshead, which your to govern your self by if you Insure. You have inclosed Sales of your first Box of Linnens & your account Current with WC. The balance due you being £54.2.9 Currency is to your credit with us, keeping you accountable to him if any outstanding Debts on Sales should prove bad. We spoke to Mr. James Callwell. He says he won't be able to remmit you this Season. We believe he is doing very well. He is now trading at Albany with the Army. G&C |
