My Dear Sister and family.
I promised a letter in October, but defer'd
[deferred?] on account of having formed a correspondence
with John (from Erie) while waiting on Thomas in St
Lawrence Hotel Sanduskey Ohio about 150 miles from here -
Since John is returned to his family, and Thomas better,
I shall venture a few lines introductory to a long letter,
when all is well.
Expecting Thomas a few weeks on a visit, and hoping you
have more sense than be alarmed. I shall send a few extracts
from his last communication of date 17th Instant.
"The character of my fever was, Typhus, and that of
possibly the worst and most dangerous nature accompanied
by a bursting and bleeding of the lungs and dirrahoa
[diarrhoea?],
My tongue I am told, had dried so that it "cracked open
like a chip of wood, or cracked sole leather" - I have been
told by my nurse that one night (about the time that it is
generally supposed the power will terminate within by
death or otherwise, say the 21st day) during her watch
with me, that my heart and pulse had so far ceased
to "beat" that she could scarce feel the action of
either - my body she said, became cold as a corpse
and it was only through her utmost exertions
by rubbing my person and keeping me wrapped
in warm blankets or flannels that heat was again
restored thanks indeed to a faithful nurse which my
Landlady was fortunate in securing for me,
for had it been some others whome [whom?] I have
had nurse me while in Sanduskey, instead of standing
over my bed side keeping as long as possible the breath
of life within me they would have been asleep, Had I that
night I speak of any other, they might have went to sleep
and thus have allowed me to seek my redress in another
world - but there is a Just God who provideth for
the wants of us all - In former sickness here
and else where, I have always attributed more to
my great abundance of hope and patience for my
speedy recovery than the Physicians Medisines [medicines?]
which I was obliged to take, as also I am told during my
late illness that both were manifested in bass-relief
and never despaired untill [until?] that sad night I have
spoken of when I whispered to my nurse that I must go,
I cannot stand this" &c &c For near to 3 weeks
I walked almost every day 2« miles, to meet a daily
mail - I have two look outs for him at the nearest station
I will not mail this untill [until?] I enquire at the station
office
" Thos [Thomas?] also writes that he became Insane or
delirious while sitting at his desk in the office on the 26th of Sept
from which time he had scarce any knowledge
of any event or person untill [until?] about the 4 or 5th
of this month
Please present my warmest wishes to John McCann Belfast,
should any inquire for me, through a Christian frame of spirit
tell them that few who persecuted me in adversity are as
independant [independent?], healthy, and happy - Tell all
those who are weary and heavy laden, also poor hirelings to
come, - educate - educate and come without delay - my poor
despised family, have every prospect of doing well
and independant [independent?]
Ever dear one & all. I have just finished
scribbling a line to Cousin Thomas (poor little fellow.) and
take the liberty to subscribe my best wishes for you in this,
I sincerely hope all are as well as I desire, accept my love
while I remain your friend J.C.R. [James Carse?]
Cousin Robert mind write
