Transcript | Erie February 5th 1855 Brother Robert as I am not very Busy at present I will write you a few lines I had the Pleasure of reading a letter from you sometime ago to Thomas I was glad to hear that you and George was doing well I have no doubt But you will do well in the timber Buisiness [business?] look out and Shave close when you have a chance I hear also that Archy is getting along well with Boyd I would like to have a letter from Archy sometime I sent him two Newspapers did he get them Archy may think it hard of me not sending for him to come to this country as he requested me the reason of that was I did not want him to leave home the [they?] had so much till do & few till work or make Markets Archy would do well in this Country But I think that a farmer in Ireland can make money now of Land if the [they?] should only raise Cattle & horses I have a letter from Thomas every week his last I will send you so as you will see he is well he had a Bad cold But is Better I got a long letter from Uncle Johnny McCann lately he gives all his friends a Lecture But us he says Uncle Samuel is rich But if he had not Been Lazy and careless he might Been far Richer he Speaks hard of Uncle Jack Being a hard Task Master after reading his long & foolish letter I sent it to Thomas so as he would have a reading of it you will see by Tom [Toms?] letter that he dont give Uncle Jimmy much credit for abuseing [abusing?] his older and wiser Brothers I Received a letter from Saml [Samuel?] on Monday last I was happay [happy?] to hear all was well & Mothers arm getting Better I was glad to hear that he got our letters safe I send them the Citizen every week I would send some papers to you But Thos [Thomas?] takes the New York times & said he would send you some regular & the Citizen & times is both good papers we had a very open & Pleasant winter here on till [until?] the first of January since it is very severe such frost & heavy falls of snow I never wittnessed [witnessed?] it is impossible some days to go out doors when it clears up there is [overland?] sleighing I take some good Sleigh rides I have scarcely any thing till do this winter we are not begun to repair the Steam Boats or Vessels yet on account of cold weather about the first of March I will have Plenty to attend to we had a great Rail war here this winter again there is a good deal of Sport I attend all the Meetings But dont interfere in any Side the High Sheriff & several Deputies came one day that Erie folks was teasing down the Bridges & attempted to take some prisoners But the Mob chased them of [off?] & covered them with rotten eggs & give them some hard knocks with Stones & Brick Bats Women & all was out I never seen greater sport we will have another war some day soon again & some fighting to [too?] I Bought four town Lots last week up conveinant [convenient?] to the Rail Road Depot from a man the name of Thos [Thomas?] Lennon formerly of the Inch near Downpatrick I paid him $500 for them I got them cheap as Mr Lennon wanted the Money he is going to move unto a farm he Bought some 12 Miles from here Money is Better in Lots as ag [against?] interest in any Banks where the [they?] Break so often I have some thought of taking a trip up through the Western Country soon & buy a farm while land is cheap farms sells to [too?] high here at present Markets of all kinds is high & farmers is Making Plenty of Money I would not want a farm to live on it is hard work I can Make Money easyier [easier?] But land is sure I wish to Be remembered to Father Mother & Brothers I hope the [they?] are all well is Cousin John McCann in Belfast yet write soon & let me know all News I am well Burn this when you read it I remain as ever your wellwishing Brother John Carse I have just now received a letter from Thomas as I was putting this into the Post Office on opening it I find February 3d he is well John Carse |
