Transcript | Philadelphia 6th December 1854 Dear Mother I for a length of time Back had in Contemplation writing home to you by way of letting you know how I was and where, But to my Sorrow I was told that my Two Brothers Both died in Colera [Cholera?] James & William I was told that last week when in the City I am about a Mile out of of it in the Insane Hospital as an atendant [attendant?] I have been there the last Nine months the wages is 14 Dollars per month Bed and Board and washing the work is not hard but sometimes unpleasant however we cannot get all sweets without some Sours and I have had my share of difficulties from time to time, when I came here I was Glad to go and work on a Public RailRoad and Remained with the same people from that time untill [until?] I got the present situation which is much less exposed to the Heat and Cold, I could have Called to see you all Before leaving the Country But was Obliged to go off in Rather a Hurried manner from the Exposure of Some of my friends But I have got that surmounted, I wish I had had the good fortune of coming out Some Twenty or Thirty years since I wish to Get My Son Andy out on the Spring as he is loosing his time where he is he could do better here if helth [health?] stands good, I never had Better helth [health?] in my life I am a Stone and a half weighter that I Ever was and never has as Easy work since I commenced the farming, please write me soon and give me the particulars of James & Williams Death and how their familys [families?] are, and Dear Robert and Family and the Messrs Manus and Family and all My other friends - Times here is Bad at the present my son James sends his best love to you and all he is got a sturdy Boy he has Bound himself an apprentice to be a Mashinist [Machinist?] one of the Best Trades here Bound himself Four years - it was Mr James L--- [Lyle?] Brother to Mrs. James Orr that told me about the Death of My Brother I see him Every time I am in Town which is one afternoon Every second week he is very Kind to me My Trunks still remain at his house Remember me to your sister Mrs Robert Orr and the family and all the [Parks?] family and the Lough [habbin?] folks I add no more But remain Yours [Your?] affectionate son #PAGE 2 Archd [Archibald?] Carson |
