Transcript | Foster of Glyde Papers. Letter from [the 7th Earl of] Carlisle, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, to Vere Foster, enclosing a note, recommending him to prominent individuals in America for assistance in his enquiries regarding the prospects for emigrants. Oct. [October] 6. /50 [1850] Dear Mr Foster, I hardly like to trouble my American friends with direct letters of recommendation, but if you will mention to those whom I have named to you (by means of this note which they would be good enough to return to you,) that you are a distant relation of mine, that from family, character, and disposition you are well entitled to their consideration, and that you are anxious to make inquiries about the position and prospects of emigrants, I have no doubt you will find them ready to show you any attention which may be in their power. Yours truly re. |
